Bioenergy Could Replace Half of India’s Fossil Fuel Use by 2030: Gadkari

According to Nitin Gadkari, India's Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, bioenergy might meet 50 percent of the country's fossil fuel needs over the next five years. He urged the Indian automotive sector to invest in alternative fuel research and development. The minister further stated that air pollution is now a serious issue and that fossil fuels are one of its main causes. He also noted that the use of fossil fuels in the transportation industry accounts for 40 percent of the nation's air pollution.

Gadkari's statement comes at a time when Indian automakers are actively developing a range of cleaner powertrain technologies, such as battery electric propulsion systems, hybrid powertrains, and compressed natural gas. In this regard, he stated that there is significant research and innovation happening in fuel and vehicle engineering. "We need to protect our ecology and environment, and fulfill the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make India a carbon-neutral country," PTI quoted Gadkari as saying.

Additionally, he emphasized the significance of bioenergy's potential to meet 50% of India's fossil fuel demand within five years, given that ₹22 lakh crore is currently being invested in fossil fuel imports. The minister further stated that the nation is experimenting with various fuels, including electric, hydrogen, biodiesel, bio LNG, CNG, flex engines, methanol, and ethanol. According to him, ethanol is currently being mixed into gasoline at levels of up to 20 percent. Gadkari stated further that "the future of the automobile industry is very good, and today there is a huge potential for all types of new research."

He continued, saying that the domestic automobile industry is a vital sector that has generated millions of jobs and increased exports. "This is the industry which has a maximum export of ₹3 lakh crores, which is economically very important for our country." According to Gadkari, it has already produced 45 million jobs for young people. He went on to say that companies like Bajaj, TVS, and Hero export 50 percent of their output.
