India, June 2 -- U Mumba TT made a remarkable comeback, securing a decisive 10-5 victory against their Western rivals, Ahmedabad SG Pipers, in the IndianOil Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 6 on Monday. This success was propelled by exceptional performances from World No. 12 Bernadette Szocs, Lilian Bardet, and Yashaswini Ghorpade. Earlier, Kolkata ThunderBlades achieved an 8-7 victory in their league debut against the Season 3 champions, Stanley's Chennai Lions.
The match commenced with Bardet maintaining his impressive form, narrowly defeating Snehit Suravajjula 2-1 after dominating the initial game and remaining steadfast in a closely contested second game. Yashaswini, making her season debut, then showcased her composure with a 2-1 victory over Ayhika Mukherjee, decisively winning the final game 11-4 after establishing an 8-0 lead.
Mumbai continued to build on their momentum as Szocs and Akash Pal collaborated to win the mixed doubles match 2-1, successfully fending off a brief resurgence from Walther and Ayhika. Akash nearly secured the tie with a surprising performance in the fourth match, winning the first game against World No. 34 Ricardo Walther before the German player fought back to equalize. However, Szocs ultimately sealed the victory in the final match, defeating Giorgia Piccolin 3-0 to secure the tie. Yashaswini and Szocs were awarded the Indian and Foreign Player of the Tie honors, respectively, while Ayhika received the Shot of the Tie accolade for her impressive forehand drive during her singles match.

In a stunning display, India's 18-year-old talent Ankur Bhattacharjee achieved the upset of the evening by defeating Olympian and World No. 55 Kirill Gerassimenko 3-0, leading the debutant Kolkata ThunderBlades to a thrilling victory over Stanley's Chennai Lions in their IndianOil UTT Season 6 opener. Ankur's backhand was particularly effective, producing nine winners in the first game alone. He narrowly won the second game on Golden Point and confidently secured the third game, earning both the Indian Player of the Tie and Shot of the Tie awards.
Chennai responded with a strong performance from World No. 36 Fan Siqi, the league's highest-valued player, who marked her debut with a commanding 3-0 victory over Selena Selvakumar. She then partnered with Payas Jain to win the mixed doubles match.
