D Gukesh achieved his first classical victory against Magnus Carlsen on Sunday, leaving the Norwegian completely stunned by the conclusion of their Round 6 encounter at Norway Chess. The World No. 1 struck his table in frustration after succumbing to the 18-year-old, subsequently shaking hands in acknowledgment of his defeat.

Conversely, Gukesh appeared incredulous at the outcome, looking utterly bewildered. As he departed, Carlsen also gave him a pat on the back, displaying his disappointment.

‘99 out of 100 times…’: D Gukesh

Despite his victory, Gukesh maintained a humble demeanor. In an interview with Chess24, he remarked, “I was merely attempting to make moves that would challenge him, and fortunately, he fell into a time scramble. One lesson I have taken from this tournament is that time scrambles can spiral out of control.”

“99 out of 100 times I would lose. It was just a fortunate day,” he added.

Gukesh’s comments received acclaim from chess legend Susan Polgar, who praised the Indian Grandmaster on X. She stated, “The World Champion exemplified the true essence of 'Win with Grace'! He possesses the heart of a warrior! Aware that he was in significant trouble both on the board and with the clock, he fought valiantly to survive and was rewarded with a remarkable victory!”

For Gukesh, this win was particularly significant, as he had previously lost to Carlsen in the opening round. He has now ascended to third place, trailing Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana by a single point.

In the meantime, Gukesh’s head coach Grzegorz Gajewski commented, “This victory provides a substantial boost of confidence for Gukesh because once you have accomplished it, you realize you can do it again. That is the objective.”

“And regarding the upcoming tournament (Norway Chess), this gives him (Gukesh) an advantage. We hope to surpass another seemingly insurmountable barrier. Perfect,” he concluded.
