Shubman Gill Advised to ‘Earn Dressing Room Respect’ Before Leading India: Critics Highlight Weak SENA Record
5 months ago | 5 Views
At only 25 years old, Shubman Gill is in the difficult position of leading Indian cricket. However, it seems like folks are hesitant to give him a opportunity. Fans have regarded him as a failure even before he had the chance to make his Test captaincy debut. Why? Because he's your second-best choice? Rohit Sharma is not returning; he has retired. Virat Kohli has done the same. Additionally, Jasprit Bumrah's delicate back prevents him from being relied upon to participate in all five Test matches. What's the drawback if the BCCI is nurturing a young person who could one day lead Indian cricket in such a situation?
Ask us, and we'll say none. Nevertheless, Gill is aware of the magnitude of the task, particularly considering that his first assignment as India’s permanent captain is in a nation where they have not won a Test series in 18 years and is without three stalwarts: Kohli, Rohit, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Another reason why people have begun to disregard Gill is his performance outside of India. Gill has only 349 runs in 13 foreign Tests, with his lone century coming in Bangladesh. The figures drop much more when those countries are narrowed down to South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia.
For this reason, former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik urged Gill to get his priorities in order with four days left before the first ball was bowled in Headingley. Karthik believes Gill should concentrate on his batting and gain the respect of his teammates in the dressing room before taking on too much responsibility in terms of strategy.
"First off, Shubman Gill, I want to advise you to wear your captaincy hat just when you're fielding. Concentrate on your batting and let the coaches handle things behind closed doors. In order to earn respect in that dressing room, Shubman Gill must score. It's available. "Given his average as an Indian batsman in SENA nations, he's not going to be proud of it," Karthik said on SKY Sports.
"He needs to score runs in the first Test so that he doesn't put extra pressure on himself going into the second Test. Be the greatest batter you can be. Captaincy will follow. There are plenty of players who can assist you, such as KL [Rahul], Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah, all of whom have previously captain the Indian team at various times. "But it's entirely up to you when it comes to the batting."
'Gill Is Going Into A Lion's Den'
England are the clear favourites on paper, what with India lacking experience and such. But when you look at it realistically, England are behind on it as well. Although careers come to an end in Australia and England, most of the players on this Indian team are only beginning their careers. Karthik claimed that Gill has not fully grasped the significance of leading the Indian Test team, especially in a location like England, where the swinging Duke ball might pose a challenge for the visiting side.
"I really don't think he has comprehended the magnitude of being India's Test captain at this moment. He is entering the lion's den. It is not simple to come to England as a cricketing nation. Karthik stated, "Many teams with superstars have come in and found it extremely, extremely tough."
"Fortunately for Shubman Gill, I believe the England bowling lineup is quite susceptible. That's the only advantage I can think of. They will be forced to face batting pressure. By "bat," I mean that the Indian team will surely be under pressure from England's batting. England is still working on their bowling, which might very well benefit India.
