Rohit Sharma Reflects on Test Cricket Retirement: ‘It Hurt My Father’
6 months ago | 5 Views
Guruntah Sharma, Rohit Sharma's father, was saddened by his choice to quit Tests, he said. In his first public statement regarding the longest format of the game since retiring, the 38-year-old claimed that his father has always admired the most difficult format and dislikes "new-age" cricket.
Rohit, who wore the Mumbai Indians colors in the just finished Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, announced his retirement from Test cricket in May 2025, only a few days before the team was revealed for the trip to England.
In the series against Australia and New Zealand, the right-handed hitter was in terrible shape, unable to score a run. The situation deteriorated to the point where he had to withdraw from the previous test in Sydney. But Rohit said he was "going nowhere" at the moment.
"My father was employed by a transportation firm. As I stated before, my father made several sacrifices in order for us to live the way we did, and my mother was heavily involved in it. However, since day one, my father has always been a supporter of Test cricket. This contemporary cricket style is not to his liking. I still recall the day I got 264 in the ODI. He said, "Okay, well played." Good job. He didn't seem thrilled at all. At the Mumbai launch of Cheteshwar Pujara's wife Puja Pujara's book, "The Diary of a Cricketer's Wife," Rohit stated that it's important to get out there and do everything.
"However, in Test cricket, people used to tell me all about it in great depth, even if I used to get decent 30s, 40s, 50s, or 60s. That was his level of affection for the sport. He continued, "And he's clearly watched you rise through the ranks.

‘My father appreciates red-ball cricket’
With 4301 runs scored at an average of 40.57 in 67 games, Rohit Sharma ended his Test career. For most of his Test career, the Indian ODI captain had a stop-start motif, but the circumstances dramatically changed when the Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli management team instructed him to start the innings in 2019.
Since then, Rohit has consistently been a member of the playing XI, and in 2022, he took over as captain from Virat Kohli, who chose to resign.
"You participate in school cricket. After that, you participate in the Irani Trophy, the Duleep Trophy, the Ranji Trophy, India A, and U19. And I've done all of it. Therefore, he has seen my journey through that. And this is how I got to the Indian team, Rohit stated.
"My father has seen me play a lot of red ball cricket, of course. Therefore, he enjoys red ball cricket very much. And then, of course, he was a bit saddened when I declared my retirement. However, he was also joyful at the same time. However, yes, that is my dad. Furthermore, he has clearly been a significant factor in my current position. "Without their assistance, it would never have been possible," he said.
In an Instagram Story earlier, Rohit Sharma declared his retirement from Test cricket. "Hello everyone, I would only want to tell you that I am quitting Test cricket. Wearing whites to represent my nation has been a true honor. Representing my nation in white has been a tremendous honor. We appreciate your love and support throughout the years. "I will keep representing India in ODIs," Rohit had said.
During his Test career, Rohit struck 12 hundred and 18 fifties. He led India to the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2023 as well. The side, however, was defeated by Australia in the championship game.
