The Boston Red Sox made the unexpected decision to trade Rafael Devers. According to the Major League Baseball (MLB) official website, the Red Sox dealt their star third baseman to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, and prospects James Tibbs III and Jose Bello. The blockbuster agreement occurs only weeks ahead of the Trade Deadline on July 31. In addition to that, the action adds intrigue to the forthcoming matchup between the Red Sox and the Giants in San Francisco.

With a 10-year, $313.5 million deal, Devers joined the Red Sox in 2023. According to a team source who spoke to the New York Times, Boston's 2025 CBT payroll following the Devers trade is nearly at the $241 million CBT base limit. As a result, the Boston-based squad has more money to spend after 2026. They might sign players ahead of the trade deadline.

The news follows the star baseman's expression of dissatisfaction to the Red Sox. According to the Guardian, Devers' relationship with the team started to sour when the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman, a Gold Glove third baseman, and instructed Devers to switch to designated hitter.

Since 2017, Devers has been an important member of the Red Sox. He guided the group to victory in the World Series in 2018 and led them in RBIs for five consecutive seasons from 2020 to 2024. According to the Associated Press, the three-time All-Star has received votes in the AL MVP top 20 five times.

The teams will face off in three matches at Oracle Park in San Francisco from June 21 to June 23. Both teams' rosters are significantly changed by the recent trade, which is sure to increase the thrill for the next games even more.

The deal happens in the wake of Devers' reported displeasure with the Red Sox. The deal allowed the Red Sox to relinquish his contract.

By bringing their 2025 payroll closer to the $241 million CBT base threshold, the transaction frees up a lot of funds for the Red Sox.

The Giants' adjusted payroll is $192.248 million, according to Spotrac.
