New Era Begins: India and England to Compete for Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy

The Pataudi Trophy will no longer be up for grabs between India and England. The trophy will now be named for James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar, according to a decision made by the BCCI and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). On June 11 at Lord's Cricket Ground, during the World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and South Africa, the two legends will unveil the new piece of silverware, according to a report on ESPNCricinfo.
The five-Test series between England and India will start on June 20 in Leeds, Headingley. The start of a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle will be initiated by the competition.
The Pataudi Trophy was the name given to the Test series between England and India up to this point. It was named after former India captains Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, his son. The Anthony de Mello Trophy was the name of the Indian counterpart.
One of the founders of BCCI, Anthony de Mello, was also the first secretary and president of the board from 1946-47 to 1950-51, hence the name of the Anthony de Mello Trophy.
The top wicket-taker for England in Tests is James Anderson. He is the most prolific pacer in the longest format, with 704 wickets to his credit. The right-arm speedster declared his retirement the previous year.
In contrast, Sachin Tendulkar has the most runs in Tests, scoring 15,921. Between 1989 and 2013, the 52-year-old participated in 200 Tests throughout a 24-year career.
Additionally, the Crowe-Thorpe trophy was just unveiled in November 2024. The victor of the Test series between England and New Zealand receives this silverware.

The name change of the Pataudi Trophy did not please Sunil Gavaskar.
Sunil Gavaskar made no bones earlier when he voiced his discontent with the authorities' decision to change the name of the Pataudi Trophy.
In the event that the ECB contacts the Indian cricketers, he had advised them to turn down the ECB's proposal to put their names on the trophy.
"It demonstrates a complete lack of awareness of the Patudis' contribution to cricket in both England and India. It's possible that a new trophy will be named after more current players, and here's hoping that if an Indian player has been approached, he will have the good sense to politely decline — not only out of respect for two former India captains but also to avoid the same fate of having a trophy named after him retired after he is gone," Gavaskar wrote in a column for Sportstar.
"I sincerely hope that any other Indian cricketer will have the brains to say no, lest history repeats itself as it has with the Pataudi Trophy," he said, along with many other Indian cricket fans.
