To the delight of the crowd, the second qualifying match of the IPL 2025 between the Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings finally started at 9:45 p.m. following a more than two-hour delay caused by rain. As if on cue, the blockbuster matchup produced a scorching moment on the pitch when Marcus Stoinis sacked seasoned opener Rohit Sharma during the Powerplay's opening overs. In the second over of the game, Rohit was fortunate to escape when Azmatullah Omarzai dropped him from Kyle Jamieson's delivery, but the former MI captain wasn't quite as fortunate the second time around.

As the Australian all-rounder smashed one into the pitch, Rohit sought to take advantage with a big hit against Stoinis. Rohit attempted to clear deep square leg by pulling, but he mistimed it and sent it right into Vijaykumar Vyshak's hands in the deep.

After the dismissal, Stoinis unleashed a thunderous cheer and beat his chest in celebration, holding back a somewhat intense celebration. For PBKS, and notably for Omarzai, the wicket was a welcome respite. Rohit left after facing just seven pitches and scoring eight runs.

Take a look at the dismissal:

The dismissal was a relief to Punjab, especially in light of Rohit's heroics in the Eliminator match against Gujarat Titans, when he was similarly released in MI. Rohit had two reprieves in the game, and he made the Titans pay for the missed opportunities by hitting a superb 81 off 50 balls, which helped the team reach a massive score of 228/5. Eventually, MI won by 20 runs, and Rohit was awarded the title of Player of the Match.

The decision was made by PBKS to bowl

At its predetermined hour of 7 p.m., Shreyas Iyer chose to bat in cloudy weather during the toss. When an unexpected drizzle struck the stadium, the umpires and players were prepared to enter the field, but there was no rain predicted. In Ahmedabad, persistent rain kept the crowd waiting for more than two hours for the game to get underway.

The match's victor faces Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the same location on Tuesday. On Wednesday, in a decisive display, RCB secured a spot in the championship game by defeating Punjab Kings by eight wickets.
