Magic Go All-In: Did Orlando’s Big Bet on Desmond Bane Outweigh Memphis’ Asset Haul?
5 months ago | 5 Views
Desmond Bane's blockbuster move from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Orlando Magic has marked the start of the NBA trade season.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope serves as the Grizzlies' centerpiece, addressing one of their issues. However, that's not everything. Additionally, they have a wide range of resources at their disposal that they may use to create a team that can win the championship.
So, who actually came out on top in the Desmond Bane NBA trade?
The specifics of the Desmond Bane deal
Desmond Bane is the only player the Orlando Magic acquired in the deal. In contrast, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony have been acquired by the Memphis Grizzlies.
In addition to the two players for instant integration, the Grizzlies will receive the following picks: the No. 16 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft; the first-round pick of Phoenix in 2026; the unprotected first-round pick of the Magic in 2028; the 2029 pick-swap; and the 2030 unprotected first-round pick.
The Grizzlies appear to have easily won the deal at first glance. But can it withstand close examination?
Who came out on top in the Desmond Bane NBA trade?
The Orlando Magic have struggled greatly in jump shooting for several years and have been among the worst teams in the NBA in that area. Desmond Bane's career 3-point shooting percentage of 41.0% may make him the solution to their problems. He averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists while shooting 39.2% from beyond the arc last season. He might be exactly what Magic needs.
The Memphis Grizzlies have also acquired a much-needed veteran in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Caldwell-Pope will address their need for defensive depth in the backcourt alongside Ja Morant. Cole Anthony will also be available to them for depth. If the Grizzlies want to retool and bring in another star or go through a rebuild, adding four firsts over the next four years is very important.
The Grizzlies are taking the long view, while the Orlando Magic are gambling on a feeble Eastern Conference the following year. Only time will tell who truly gained from the deal, but both got what they wanted.
