Kohli Walks Over to Mayanti, Invites Her to Trophy – A Moment to Remember
6 months ago | 5 Views
Tuesday's IPL Trophy victory was for all the players who have played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team during the previous 18 years, not just the Rajat Patidar-led side, which defeated the Punjab Kings by six runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Virat Kohli meant what he said. Mayanti Langer, a broadcaster whose husband Stuart Binny was a member of the RCB squad the last time they made it to the final, was moved to tears by his gesture.
Halfway through the celebrations, as the RCB players were walking about the field with the title, Kohli was seen in a video that became popular on social media grabbing the trophy from Jitesh Sharma and walking over to Mayanti, where he said, "touch the trophy." She felt moved by the action.
Binny, a Bangalore native who played for the RCB club for two seasons before giving up all forms of cricket in 2021, was a member of the team himself. After making it to the final in his first campaign in 2016, RCB was refused the title when he was defeated by Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Mayanti also has ties to the city. She moved to Bengaluru more than ten years ago, even though she was born in Delhi. "I followed a lad to Bengaluru (chuckles). When I met Stuart (cricketer Stuart Binny) and we began to grow closer, we made the decision to remain together after our engagement. That's how Bengaluru came to be. My husband obtained an apartment for us, which is how I ended up here, knowing that it was a long-term dedication. In an interview with the Hindustan Times in 2021, he had said, "I love the city, it has a charm about it. There are so many places that I've come to like, from Cubbon Park to Chinnaswamy Stadium, and we have a great group of friends here, so it feels like home."
The RCB squad prepares for the victory parade.
The Patidar-led squad arrived in Bengaluru on Wednesday afternoon to a thunderous reception from cheering supporters who stood along the streets hoping to see the celebrity-laden team. The players were greeted at the airport by the state's Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.
At 5 p.m., the entire team will join the victory celebration at Chinnaswamy Stadium. The day will start with the eagerly awaited open-top bus parade from Vidhana Soudha to the stadium.
