Following a disappointing performance in the previous edition, which resulted in the retirements of legendary players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin, Team India is now prepared to begin the new World Test Championship cycle. The forthcoming five-game Test series against England, which will mark the beginning of the new WTC cycle, will put head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill in the spotlight.

Managing Jasprit Bumrah's workload will be the team management's biggest challenge. After participating in all five Tests of the Australia tour, he just recovered from a back ailment he sustained there. Based on input from the medical staff, India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated during the squad announcement for the England tour that the 31-year-old Bumrah would not be able to play in all five Tests. Before departing for England, Gambhir informed the press that Bumrah would only participate in three of the tour's Tests.

Former NCA chief physiotherapist Ashish Kaushik offered his ideas on how to properly regulate a fast bowler's workload.

"Every player has a workload ratio that goes from intense to chronic. According to research, the likelihood of injury can be reduced by maintaining a specific workload, and exceeding or falling below that level may put one at risk.

"You may be under bowled as well as over bowled." Training is also a part of the workload, not just bowling. Kaushik told SportsBoom.com that it should be measured across all demanding tasks, including bowling, hitting, fielding, strength training, and conditioning training. The measure shouldn't increase or decrease from the point at which they can perform.

Kaushik says that the goal should be to make sure that everyone is in a safe place.

A number of injuries have hindered Bumrah's career, causing him to miss a number of significant competitions, such as the 2022 T20 World Cup, the 2023 World Test Championship Final, and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

In 2019, Kaushik accompanied him to England to see professionals about a stress fracture

The former lead physiotherapist of the NCA shared his thoughts and plan for how the Indian team management should handle the workload of every player.

Kaushik stated that the goal of this test series should be to make sure that all of the athletes are in the safe zone, where their bodies are accustomed to operating at a specific level and their actions on the field are predictable.

"One has to make sure the bodies have enough time to recover from a bout of activity before engaging in any more activity. They need a lengthy unloading period during which sleep, diet, and emotional healing are prioritized. It helps keep players energized for the upcoming session, he explained.

Kaushik advises head coach Gautam Gambhir and the rest of the coaching staff in no uncertain terms not to skimp on the players' training.

"It's vital to physically prepare a bowler to handle the burden of bowling. They will need to train and build their strength, spend enough time on the field, run in the form of conditioning programs, and make sure their bodies are able to return in second and third spells and perform in the same way," stated Kaushik.
