Pat Cummins Responds to Sledging Rumors: Will Australia Target Rabada’s Drug Ban in WTC Final?

The upcoming World Test Championship final against South Africa will see Australia captain Pat Cummins disclose if his side will sledge Kagiso Rabada about his most recent drug ban controversy. The Australian team is well known for its aggressive style of cricket, which includes utilizing fierce sledging on the field to break focus and demoralize the opposition. In January, Rabada was suspended for testing positive for a recreational drug during a Twenty20 match in South Africa.

The Proteas pacer left the IPL 2025 in the middle of his suspension, and it was later discovered that he had been found using cocaine in January.

According to its website, the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport (SAIDS) said that Rabada had tested positive for "benzoylecgonine, metabolite of cocaine".

South Africa chose him to play in the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's. London.

Prior to the big finale, Cummins was questioned on whether his team would try to retaliate against Rabada for his drug ban.

“It’s not really our style. I'd be shocked if that came up,” Cummins answered.

At 327 wickets, Rabada is three behind Allan Donald, who is fourth on South Africa's all-time list. In the pace attack, Rabada will be supported by Lungi Ngidi and left-armer Marco Jansen.

This will be Cummins's second time captaining the Australian squad in the World Test Championship final. Australia advanced to the final after defeating India in January, winning 13 of the 19 matches. They were defeated just twice on the road.

Cummins says, "Perhaps captaincy isn't for me."

The previous edition saw them defeat India in the championship game thanks to Cummins' leadership. Tim Paine handed over the reins of the Australian Test team to the right-arm pacer in November 2021, and he wasted no time in restoring their supremacy.

When he was appointed captain of the squad, Cummins shed light on his response, admitting that he was unsure of his own leadership abilities.

"There was a great deal of anxiety." First, because I was unsure of my leadership abilities. I was a bit apprehensive because it was a large position and things could suddenly turn against you, but I also lacked experience. A piece of me wondered, "Maybe captaincy isn't for me." But there are enough wonderful aspects of the work that I truly love, Cummins said.
