Jasprit Bumrah Says He Can Only Play Three Tests Against England, Not All Five

Jasprit Bumrah, India's fast bowling leader, has almost validated his participation in three games of the upcoming five-Test series against England, which will start on June 20. The series will commence Bumrah's comeback to red-ball cricket after a long injury absence, as well as India's new World Test Championship cycle. Since the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in January, when a back injury once again sidelined him, the top fast bowler has not participated in international cricket.

Bumrah verified during a conversation with former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik for Sky Sports Cricket that he would not be accessible for every Test because of workload issues. He said that the team management is now organizing three Tests with him, but there is room for additional games based on the workload.

"Plan on the go. I'm looking at three test matches," Bumrah said.

"The figure is clearly not final. First (Test) is confirmed; it will take place. The rest depends on the circumstances, such as the workload and scenario. However, I can currently only conduct three tests.

Bumrah emphasized that he does not wish to push himself in the longest format of the game and that his primary motivation for declining the Indian captaincy was his apprehensions about workload management.

"I don't want to find myself in a hopeless situation. That's one component, too. I can't demand that I can only play three Test matches if I had been a captain. That sends a negative message to the group. "I want to be at my best as a player and contribute to the best of my capability," Bumrah stated.

Gill will be in charge

During the series against England, Shubman Gill will helm the Indian Test side for the first time. The retirement of Rohit Sharma from the format prompted the announcement of the decision last month. Bumrah had served as India's vice-captain under Rohit and had also captained the team in two games during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, the pace bowler's propensity for injuries ultimately proved to be the biggest obstacle to his selection as the next captain of India.

Virat Kohli also retired from the format last month, and India plays England in the first Test at Headingley.
