The Director Who Remade His Own Blockbuster Three Times in a Year—And Then Vanished from Bollywood
6 months ago | 5 Views
Making one's own film in another language is not a novel trend. In Hindi film, Priyadarshan built a career for himself by remaking his old Malayalam classics in Bollywood, which he did with great success. Atlee has recently repurposed components from his films for his Hindi debut, Jawan. But one man in the late 2010s was able to do it far better than anyone else. This maverick produced the same movie in three different languages with three different star casts, all in the same year. And every one of them was a smash. However, this was his last attempt in Bollywood.
The filmmaker who created the same movie three times
In the film industry, Siddique Ismail, who went by the moniker Siddique, began his career in Malayalam cinema as Fazil's helper. Later, he joined Lal, and the Siddique-Lal combination produced several hits for Mollywood. However, Siddique started directing films alone following their break-up in the 1990s. He directed Bodyguard in 2010, which featured Dileep, Nayanthara, and Mithra Kurian. The picture was a huge box office hit, prompting demands for a remake in the Tamil and Telugu film communities. Only a few months later, Siddique directed Kaavalan, the Tamil remake. Vijay, Asin, and Mithra Kurian (reprising her role from the Malayalam original) were the stars of this picture. Vijay's first film to earn ₹100 crore, Kaavalan was dubbed an industry blockbuster.

With the Hindi version of The Bodyguard, Siddique went on the floors barely a year after the film's debut. This movie, which also goes by the name Bodyguard, featured Raj Babbar and Hazel Keech as well as Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor. One of the highest-grossing Hindi films at the time of its release, the movie made ₹253 crore.
The brief Bollywood career of Siddique
Following the popularity of the three Bodyguard movies, Siddique returned to Malayalam film. He reportedly received offers from famous Bollywood actors who wanted to copy the Bodyguard's success. But Siddique was considering Malayalam cinema. In 2018, he produced another Tamil movie called Bhaskar Oru Rascal, which was once again a remake of one of his films. His last film, Big Brother, which starred Mohanlal and Arbaaz Khan, was produced in 2020. In July 202, after a protracted illness, Siddique passed away at the age of 55 from liver cirrhosis.
