Namit Malhotra's Ramayana, which is set 5,000 years ago and loved by 2.5 billion people worldwide, is being reimagined as a two-part live-action movie universe on the same scale as the biggest tentpole films made to date. In a collaboration unlike anything ever seen, the picture brings together some of the most famous actors from India and Hollywood.

Ramayana, which is being shot for IMAX and will be released worldwide in two parts during Diwali 2026 and Diwali 2027, is produced by Namit Malhotra's Prime Focus Studios and eight-time Oscar-winning VFX studio DNEG in collaboration with Yash's Monster Mind Creations and is directed by Nitesh Tiwari.

July 3, 2025: With the worldwide premiere of "Ramayana: The Introduction," the creators of the world's most ambitious cinematic event unveiled the epic universe of Ramayana, paving the way for the timeless battle between two of mythology's most iconic forces: Rama and Ravana. The release was a global event, including a stunning billboard takeover at Times Square in New York and fan screenings in nine Indian cities. With legendary filmmaker and producer Namit Malhotra at the helm and Yash as co-producer, Ramayana reunites an incredible group of Oscar-winning technicians, Hollywood's top talents, and India's biggest stars in acting and storytelling to reimagine one of the most potent epics of civilization as a groundbreaking cinematic universe that is rooted in Indian culture but made for the globe.

THE TALE

The cosmic trinity—Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Protector, and Shiva the Destroyer—maintains equilibrium in the universe by upholding harmony among gods, sages, humans, and demons in an age that is timeless. However, a power unlike anything that has ever existed emerges from the ruins of this equilibrium.

The most feared and unbreakable monarch in all of creation, Ravana, is formed from an improbable demon kid. His goal is obvious: to kill Vishnu, the god of protection, whom he thinks has always been against his race. His roar makes the skies tremble.

Vishnu assumes his most vulnerable form—that of a mortal prince by the name of Rama—in order to halt him from doing so.

The endless conflict begins at this point:

Rama versus Ravana. Between mortal and immortal. Light and darkness. Ramayana continues to influence the hearts of a billion people today as a tale of timeless fate, cosmic conflict, and the victory of good.

THE CAST AND CREW

Ramayana features a fantastic cast that brings together India's top talent:

Rama, played by Ranbir Kapoor, a fourth-generation legend of Indian film.

Ravana is played by Yash, the co-producer and India's top pan-Indian celebrity.

Sai Pallavi in the role of the adored Sita

Indian cinema's evergreen action star Sunny Deol plays Hanuman.

In a welcome departure from his previous roles, Ravie Dubey portrays Rama's devoted brother Lakshman.

An amazing crew supports this stellar cast. Oscar-winning giants Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman collaborate for the first time to produce a novel cinematic symphony.

The massive conflicts between gods and devils are being choreographed by Hollywood's leading stunt directors, Terry Notary (Avengers, Planet of the Apes) and Guy Norris (Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa).

At an unprecedented scale, famous production designers Ravi Bansal (Dune 2, Aladdin, etc.) and Ramsey Avery (Captain America, Tomorrowland, etc.) are reinventing the aesthetic majesty of ancient India in order to provide an engrossing cinematic experience.

FROM INDIA TO THE WORLD: A VISION

The producer, filmmaker, Prime Focus creator, and DNEG CEO, Namit Malhotra, states:

"This is a cultural movement for every Indian in the world. We're not just sharing history with Ramayana; we're also sharing our legacy with the world. We can tell this tale with genuineness, passion, and cutting-edge cinematic innovation by bringing together the greatest talent from across the globe. Although the Ramayana has been represented before, this iteration captures its landscapes, animals, and conflicts with the scale and magnificence they merit. This is the reality of being Indian. It is now our gift to the planet.

The movie's director, Nitesh Tiwari, tells us:

"We have all grown up with the tale of the Ramayana. It embodies the spirit of our culture. We wanted to pay tribute to that spirit and give it the cinematic magnitude it merited. It is both a great duty and a sincere honor to bring it to life as a filmmaker. Because it addresses something profound and timeless inside of us, the story has lasted for thousands of years. We're not just producing a movie. Our idea is that we should be guided by respect, excellence, and the goal of crossing borders.

Designed for the world's most immersive formats, such as IMAX, Ramayana is intended to be a transformative theatrical experience — a cinematic journey into the core of one of humanity's most enduring epics.

Prasads' cutting-edge PCX screen gave the media an exclusive first look at the sight, which stunned everyone. Reviewers praised it as a visual spectacle and said the experience was unlike anything they had seen before.
