With titles like Empuraan, Thudarum, Rekhachithram, and Alappuzha Gymkhana breaking big at the box office, 2025 was a fantastic year for Malayalam film. However, there were a number of other movies released this year that are still worth seeing despite not doing as well at the box office. The Malayalam movies from the first half of 2025 that deserve your attention (at least in the OTT sphere) include Tovino Thomas' Identity and Basil Joseph's Pravinkoodu Shappu.

Malayalam movies from 2025 that merit greater recognition

Identity

With Identity, the first significant release of 2025, well-known actor Tovino Thomas heralded the arrival of the New Year for Malayalam film. The narrative revolves around a police officer, an eyewitness to a crime, and a sketch artist as they attempt to identify the murderer. However, the narrative ends in a manner that seems a bit excessive and is full of twists and turns. The technically excellent movie, which is supported by some amazing action scenes, an exciting vehicle chase, and outstanding performances, should be commended to the director combo of Akhil Paul and Anas Khan. Trisha Krishnan and Vinay Rai, who are both well-known Tamil actors, have significant roles in the film.

The Shop for Right Codes

Basil Joseph, a Malayali actor and director, became a police officer for Pravinkoodu Shappu. At the center of this movie is a depressing toddy shop. One evening, the owner of the toddy shop is discovered dead in the center of the establishment, and everyone in the building becomes a suspect. Basil Joseph's CI Santhosh solves cases using nothing but intellect and reasoning, without using any violent methods. Other important characters in the film include Soubin Shahir, Chemban Vinod Jose, and Chandini Sreedharan.

Daveed

Pepe, as he is known by his followers, is the protagonist of Daveed, in which he plays the role of Aashiq Abu. In one of his jobs as a bouncer, Aashiq Abu realizes he has to confront an international boxing champion in the ring. Abu's family and his wonderful relationships with his daughter are also given room in the action-packed film. Daveed, which is directed by filmmaker Govind Vishnu, also features important roles for Vijayaraghavan and Lijomol Jose.

Death-mass

Basil Joseph stars in another film, but this time he's on the wrong side of the law. Luke PP, the Gen Z brat who is creating a lot of problems for the citizens of his town, is the character he plays. Thus, they believe Luke to be the perpetrator if they are worried that a serial murderer may be among them. Additionally, as fate would have it, Luke finds himself on a bus with a serial murderer, a dead body, and his ex-girlfriend, which makes for an interesting trip. Because of its situational humor and odd characters, this movie is worth seeing at least once.
