Young, Anxious, and Calling 911: Misread Signs of a Mental Health Crisis

We've all felt worried at some point, but it manifests in different ways for everyone. Although it's widespread, anxiety remains widely misunderstood, underdiagnosed, and stigmatized, particularly among males. Actually, males are almost half as likely as women to be diagnosed with an anxiety illness. Some people may have difficulty expressing or recognizing their emotions, while others experience societal pressure to portray a tough exterior and repress their feelings.

What causes young men to wait before asking for assistance?

A disturbing trend is shown by recent research published in the Journal of Affective Disorders: young males are more and more frequently contacting ambulance services when their anxiety symptoms become out of hand, occasionally even confusing them with heart attacks.

Study reveals that many young men hesitate to seek help for anxiety, viewing it as a weakness due to societal norms.

However, rather than visiting a doctor or therapist sooner, why do so many people wait till it's an emergency to seek help? Researchers in Victoria, Australia, examined paramedic records for 694 males between the ages of 15 and 25 in order to learn more about the factors that lead people to place that life-changing call.

How male norms are suppressing anxiety

According to the study, boys are frequently taught to value strength and independence, leaving them with little space for vulnerability. Anxiety is presented as a failing, which runs counter to conventional notions of masculinity, when people are pushed to "face their fears" rather than receive emotional support. The sort of help young men anticipate versus what they may actually require is influenced by this disconnect.

Consequently, many people grow up believing that their male role models—fathers, brothers, grandfathers, and coaches—don't have anxiety, which makes it more difficult for them to admit to their own difficulties or seek assistance. Due to the lack of discussion surrounding men's anxiety, it is often overlooked, and crucial opportunities for early intervention are missed.

Despite campaigns that question inflexible gender stereotypes and have helped raise awareness about men's depression, anxiety remains underexplored. Even though it can have major effects, such as drug addiction and an increased risk of suicide, it is seldom addressed with the same seriousness or worry.
