Monsoon Gut Check: Top Triggers and Prevention Tips
4 months ago | 5 Views
Gut-related problems tend to increase dramatically during the monsoon season due to higher humidity and a greater risk of food and water contamination. Dr. Anukalp Prakash, director of gastroenterology at CK Birla Hospital in Gurugram, spoke about how dietary adjustments might help avoid the increase in gut issues that occurs during monsoon.
What causes an increase in gastrointestinal issues throughout the monsoon season?
1. Polluted water source: Rainwater has a propensity to mix with sewage and enter water sources, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and gastroenteritis.
2. Increased humidity encourages bacterial development: High humidity encourages the rapid proliferation of bacteria and fungus, which readily infect surfaces and food.
3. A decline in street food cleanliness: Street foods and raw materials become breeding grounds for germs, especially when kept in humid conditions. The digestive system is compromised during monsoon, and the ability to digest food that is contaminated or heavy decreases.
4. Mold and fungus in stored grains: Moist storage promotes fungal growth, which causes food poisoning and inflammation in the gut by contaminating pulses, cereals, and nuts.
5. Frequent infections and antibiotic use: The use of antibiotics is common in treating monsoon fevers and common colds, which disrupts the intestinal flora and causes bloating, acidity, or diarrhea.

Prevention tips to avoid gut issues in the monsoon season:
1. Use just filtered or boiled water: To prevent the chance of illness, avoid tap water and make sure your water is safe.
2. Eat warm meals that have just been prepared: Warm meals are simpler to digest and have a lower chance of being contaminated with germs. Avoid eating reheated leftovers.
3. Choose meals that are light and not greasy: Eat foods that are easily digested, like khichdi, soups, and mildly spiced dals.
4. Incorporate probiotic foods: Rice, buttermilk, and curd can help replenish beneficial gut flora.
5. Use ginger and asafoetida (hing): These herbs aid digestion, avoid bloating, and fight gut infections.
6. Avoid leafy greens and salads: These might harbor dirt or parasites and are hard to wash thoroughly. Choose cooked vegetables.
7. Refrain from eating raw foods and cold drinks: They can increase the chance of contracting a foodborne illness and weaken digestion.
