The high chance of stagnant collected water from the downpour, combined with increased humidity, makes it the perfect breeding environment for mosquitoes and bacteria. Dr. Jnanashree Deepak, a consulting obstetrician and gynecologist at Apollo Cradle & Children's Hospital, Rajajinagar, stressed in an interview with a Lifestyle Magazine the need for proactive immunity development during the monsoon in order to lessen the risk of illness.

- What to stay away from: To prevent gastrointestinal problems, which are prevalent during the monsoon season, particularly in pregnant women, avoid processed meals and choose freshly cooked meals made at home.
- What to include in the diet: Eat seasonal fruits and veggies. Furthermore, zinc and antioxidants, which are beneficial for pregnant women and newborns, can be found in entire grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds like almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and others.
2. Keep yourself hydrated
- Maintaining hydration helps the body get rid of poisons.
- Boiling or filtering your water can help you avoid the risks of contracting waterborne illnesses such cholera and typhoid as the water quality worsens throughout the monsoon season.
- When suffering from respiratory infections, it helps to use ingredients like turmeric, ginger, or tulsi in drinks.
3. Practice good hygiene

- Maintaining appropriate hygiene practices, such as washing hands before cooking and during meals, can help prevent infection from harmful germs/bacteria.
- Fungal infections may be avoided by wearing dry, breathable clothing and staying away from wet attire.
- During monsoon, storing all components in an airtight container will help avoid worm infestation. Avoid standing water in containers, since it may serve as a breeding site for mosquitoes.
- While nursing their newborns, mothers must maintain adequate hygiene to prevent the spread of infection.
4. Get enough sleep and exercise regularly
- Physical activities, such as yoga and walking, can lower stress and improve blood circulation, while getting enough sleep is just as crucial.
- Sleep deprivation is common among expectant mothers, and it somewhat impairs the immune system's capacity to combat illnesses. Getting enough sleep and engaging in frequent physical activity during pregnancy, under a doctor's supervision, are essential for maintaining good health and resilience during the monsoon season.
