The majority of our day is spent scrolling, swiping, and streaming, which puts a lot of strain on the eyes and causes digital fatigue. Spending so much time staring at screens can frequently result in eye strain, dryness, and poor vision. For this reason, it is now imperative to take care of your eyes. In the middle of a busy schedule dominated by screens, switching between work laptops in the morning and TVs and phones at night, you may be able to break up your day by sneaking in a few minutes of mild eye yoga.

Dr. Digvijay Singh, MBBS (AIIMS), MD (AIIMS), FAICO, which is especially important in today's world of screens. Eye Yoga, he said, "is specific to the eyes, whereas regular yoga is aimed at physical and mental strength and flexibility. Eye Yoga includes eye exercises which help improve eye muscle tone, reduce eye fatigue and enhance focus, apart from improving dry eyes."

In addition to describing how to execute them and their possible benefits, Dr. Digvijay Singh offered five eye yoga techniques:

1. zooming

What to do: This involves focusing on a distant point or thing before abruptly switching attention to a nearby point or object.

Benefits: This many switches can improve convergence and presbyopia by increasing the eye's capacity to switch focus between objects.

This is especially helpful for those who spend a lot of time in front of screens.

2. Pushups with a pencil

Those who are on phone for long periods can do pencil pushup to ease the strain.
  • How to do: This exercise involves holding a pen or pencil at an arm’s length and then bringing it closer towards the nose while continuously maintaining focus on the tip of the pencil. It is done slowly and repeated multiple times.
  • Benefits: This helps in strengthening the ability of both eyes to converge and focus nearby.
  • Who is it useful for: It is useful for people with a lot of work or who have high screen time.

3. Continuous concentration

This involves keeping your eyes fixed on a candle flame, a fine thing, or a point in the distance for an extended period of time without blinking. The conclusion usually involves a few tears in the eyes.

Benefits: This improves concentration and the capacity of the eye muscles to maintain a gaze.

4. Nine gaze movements and eye rotation

How to do it: First, gradually move your eyes from the main central gaze to eight peripheral gazes of vision, such as left, right, up, down, up and left, up and right, down and left, and finally down and right, before switching directions.

Advantages: The purpose of this workout is to enhance the general strength and performance of the extraocular muscles, which are in charge of controlling the eyes' movement in different directions. To activate the extraocular muscles, the eyes are rotated slowly in clockwise and counterclockwise directions.

5. blinking

One type of eye relaxation exercise involves blinking quickly and slowly in sets, which helps to alleviate dry eyes and calm the eye muscles.

The tear film can evenly spread over the ocular surface thanks to the blink, which gives the eye a little break.

This is beneficial for those who spend a lot of time reading and watching screens.

6. Palming

Palm is a technique for relaxing the eyes rather than just a workout.

By rubbing the palms of your hands together for 10 seconds to create heat, you can then gently place them over your closed eyes so that the warmth permeates your eyelids and eyes.
