Coffee and Anti-Ageing: Study Breaks the Hype with a Catch

Coffee is more than simply your typical energy booster. There are varying viewpoints on it, some of which give it a negative name while others consider it a lifesaver (primarily for all-nighters). However, similar to other aspects of life, the advantages of coffee depend on the circumstances. A recent study, which was published in the journal Microbial Cell on June 24, 2025, strikes a balance by reiterating the significance of context for the benefits of anything to materialize. This novel research sheds new insight on the well-liked beverage and its potential anti-aging effects, but there's a caveat.

The ways in which coffee helps aging and extends cell lifespan

Coffee is one of the drinks believed to have anti-ageing properties, but there's a catch.

Researchers from Queen Mary University of London carried out the study. They were curious as to whether caffeine may extend cell life and help fix DNA damage. The purpose of the research was to examine the effects of coffee beyond simply providing us with a surge of energy.

The study group used fission yeast in their experiments. Although they are unicellular, they have fundamental characteristics in common with human cells. Various stresses, such as nutrient deficiency, were placed on the yeast cells. The scientists then introduced caffeine to the yeast cells.

The study indicated that, even under typical circumstances, caffeine really did increase the lifespan of yeast cells. The biological cause behind this was discussed in greater detail in the study. Caffeine works by interacting with specific cell pathways known as AMPK, which are advantageous because they aid cells in coping with stress. However, two proteins, Ssp1 and Ssp2, must be present in order for caffeine to be effective, as the benefits of caffeine cannot be seen in their absence.

But then, what are the drawbacks?

Under certain circumstances, caffeine, the very substance that aids with cell aging, can actually do more harm. Caffeine might make matters worse if the cell's DNA is already harmed. By disrupting the cell's normal repair mechanism, it prevents it from repairing itself effectively. What does this imply, then? Even though caffeine may have anti-aging properties, its beneficial effects are contingent upon the cell's interior environment.

This serves as a reminder of why one shouldn't blindly follow the anti-ageing foods or beverages without first learning their body type. What might work in one circumstance may, in fact, have the opposite effect, making the problem it's intended to solve worse. Similar to how DNA damage negates the impact of coffee, knowing the body's internal environment is essential to determining if something will be beneficial or detrimental. For some individuals, what might work for others might not.
