Piyali Maity lists the following five warning signs that could signal bad mental health:
1. Abrupt decline in performance
- A significant decline in an employee's work quality or timeliness usually indicates more than simply a bad week.
- Missed deadlines without explanation, tasks taking longer than expected, and a decrease in attention to detail are all seen.
- When a previously dependable employee starts to neglect duties or deliver inconsistent outcomes, it may be a sign of emotional distress or stress underneath.
2. Recess from team engagement
- One of the first indicators of possible mental health issues is a shift in communication style.
- An employee who used to be actively involved may begin to avoid meetings, participate less in group conversations, or be unexpectedly brusque or excessively apologetic.
- A shift in tone, whether it be more negative or indifferent, might indicate feelings of emotional weariness, anxiety, or solitude.

3. Indicators of fatigue or burnout
- When an employee seems consistently fatigued, stressed, or overworked, it may indicate more than just a heavy workload.
- Frequent overtime, difficulty unplugging, and looking confused or mentally exhausted are all symptoms of burnout.
- Even when they are multitasking, there may be only slight real progress, suggesting that their resources are too dispersed.
4. Greater annoyance or emotional outbursts
- A warning sign might be abrupt changes in mood or intensified emotional reactions to normal comments.
- An employee may become excessively sensitive during discussions or respond defensively to little matters.
- In some instances, they may become agitated, shun constructive conversation, or even become combative, all of which may be the result of underlying emotional or mental stress.
5. Revealing indicators of personal issues
- Sometimes, employees disclose personal information that suggests more serious problems.
- Trouble sleeping, anxiety, and frequent physical problems like fatigue or headaches shouldn't be disregarded.
- If a discussion mentions a general feel of hopelessness, financial worries, or family demands, it may suggest that the person is experiencing a difficult moment and could use support.
