On Friday, July 4, the Kerala High Court dismissed a sexual assault complaint against Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan. The filmmaker was granted relief by the court in the case, but a copy of the judgment is still awaited, according to a report from Bar and Bench.

The sexual assault complaint against Ranjith was overturned by the High Court

Ranjith was represented in court by a senior advocate who is said to have submitted evidence that persuaded the court to rule in his favor. The judge had granted Ranjith's request to drop the lawsuit against him. The Taj Hotel, where the alleged incident occurred, was only established four years after the event, as the lawyer had noted. In the past, a different judge had issued a stay on criminal proceedings against Ranjith for the same reason. It was then noted that the FIR was lodged 12 years after the alleged incident, and there was no explanation given for the delay in submitting it.

Ranjith was accused by a male aspiring actor in September of last year. The filmmaker allegedly invited him to the Taj Hotel's fourth floor, where he said he was attacked. The cops submitted a complaint against Ranjith in the case in August of last year. He was charged in October with violating Section 377 of the IPC (unnatural offenses) and Section 66E of the IT Act, 2000 (violation of privacy). The High Court granted his petition on Friday to have the FIR overturned.

The accusations against Ranjith Balakrishnan

The complainant reportedly met Ranjith while filming a movie in Kozhikode in December 2012, according to the FIR, where the supposed event occurred. To meet actor Mammootty, he went to the set of Bavuttiyude Namathil, which was written and directed by Ranjith. The director invited the complainant to the hotel in Bengaluru, close to Kempegowda International Airport, after the meeting after getting his contact information. The complainant stated that he was physically attacked and given alcohol.

He was accused of committing sexual assault for the second time. The first was performed by a Bengali actress.
