Motion Picture Academy welcomes Indian celebrities
On June 26, 534 people were invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, including Kamal Haasan, Ayushmann Khurrana, Ariana Grande, Brandi Carlile, Andrew Watt, Branford Marsalis, Conan O'Brien, and Jimmy Kimmel.
The list of new invitees is strengthened by the addition of other well-known Indian figures, including filmmaker Payal Kapadia, casting director Karan Mally, cinematographer Ranabir Das, costume designer Maxima Basu, and documentary filmmaker Smriti Mundra.
The most recent group of Oscar voters hails from the worldwide arena and features a number of celebrities, including Andrew Scott, Danielle Deadwyler, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza, and Dave Bautista. Other names include Oscar winner Mikey Madison, Adriana Paz (Emilia Pérez), Sebastian Stan, and the Succession actors Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong, as well as Naomi Ackie, Monica Barbaro, Jodie Comer, and Gillian Anderson.
The total membership of the academy (including Emeritus) would be 11,120, with 10,143 voting members, if all of these invitees were to accept membership.
Additional information regarding the Academy's membership
The Academy's membership process, which includes one membership category and nineteen chapters, is based on sponsorship rather than application. Candidates must be supported by two Academy members from the branch or category to which they are applying, with the exception of Associates.
In line with the Academy's dedication to promoting representation, inclusion, and fairness for everyone, the membership selection process places a strong emphasis on professional credentials.
Forty-one percent of the 2025 invited class is composed of women, forty-five percent comes from underrepresented groups, and fifty-five percent comes from sixty different nations and territories outside of the United States. In 2025, only those who accept the invitations will be inducted into the Academy.
The Oscars are planned for March 15, 2026, and the voting period for the nominations will be from January 12 to January 16. The annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon will take place on February 10, and the official candidates will be revealed on January 22. The Oscars are scheduled to be hosted by Conan O'Brien.
