Janaki v/s State of Kerala Director Fires Back at CBFC Over Religious Name Objection
5 months ago | 5 Views
After the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) refused to grant certification to the forthcoming Malayalam film, Janaki v/s State of Kerala (JSK), it has been the subject of a heated debate. The movie, which stars BJP MP and actor Suresh Gopi, was scheduled to be released in theaters on June 27, 2025. It has been claimed that the delay was caused by the use of the deity name "Janaki," and the producers of JSK have now gone to the Kerala High Court. In the middle of all this, JSK head Pravin Narayanan wrote a scathing Facebook post criticizing the board for the delay in issuing the certification, asserting that "Taliban is not ruling" the area.

With actor-politician Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran, the young Malayalam filmmaker Pravin Narayanan directed Janaki v/s State of Kerala. Pravin Narayanan wrote a scathing letter of protest on his Facebook page since the delay in obtaining the CBFC certification indicated that the movie was unlikely to be released on June 27.
"Taliban is not ruling here to state that movies should not be named after deities," Pravin Narayanan said in his article, which was written in Malayalam.
He said it was an 'extreme fascist attitude' to claim that such names cannot be given to people or used in films, even though Hinduism has 330 million gods.
He also added that this movie, which is set in a courtroom, has nothing to do with mythology or history. This film portrays a victim's battle for survival, he said, and is based on actual events. He also expressed his firm belief that the revising committee would see the film for what it is. It's worth mentioning that the movie's teaser was certified earlier.
judicial dispute involving the JSK
In the interim, the Kerala High Court has been informed by the CBFC that the Suresh Gopi-starred JSK has been submitted to the revising committee, which will convene on June 26. The Kerala High Court has requested the board to present the revising committee's decision to the bench on June 27.
