Aamir Khan Questions Double Standards: Praising Shakespeare Adaptations but Criticizing Film Remakes Is Pointless, He Says
6 months ago | 5 Views
With his upcoming movie, Sitaare Zameen Par, actor Aamir Khan is scheduled to make a comeback on the big screen this summer. He portrays a basketball coach in the movie, which is a remake of the Spanish film Campeones, who is instructing a squad of athletes with specific requirements. It had also served as the inspiration for the movie Champions. Aamir has supported remakes, claiming that they are invariably a fresh perspective on an old story, even if Sitaare Zameen Par has been criticized for being a "copy".
Remakes are defended by Aamir Khan
Aamir's debut film in three years is Sitaare Zameen Par. Laal Singh Chaddha, which was the official adaptation of Forrest Gump, was also a remake of his prior film. On Raj Shamani's podcast, Aamir addressed this by saying, "After Laal Singh (Chaddha), a lot of people told me, 'you are making a remake again'.". For being a remake, Laal Singh received a lot of trolling. However, I have a different personality. Practical matters are beyond my comprehension. A remake doesn't bother me in the least, and I don't think my creativity is waning. I see it as a new assignment. This narrative was written by someone else, and I am just providing my viewpoint.
"Shakespeare is praised by everyone while film remakes are criticized."
Additionally, Aamir compared film remakes to theatrical versions of William Shakespeare's dramas in an effort to justify them. "Shakespeare is still performed by people nowadays. Shakespeare is still the greatest playwright in the world, even now. His plays are still translated into every language. And we give it our approval. Why, though? The movie is a remake; bring it to an end. Why are you still imitating Shakespeare when you could write your own play? This is erroneous reasoning. I concentrate my efforts on adapting Shakespeare. I see no purpose in this discussion on remakes.
William Shakespeare is regarded as one of the best playwrights in the English tongue. Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet, King Lear, and A Comedy of Errors are some of his famous plays that have been adapted for the stage and film thousands of times. His plays have also been adapted into a number of Indian movies, most notably Vishal Bhardwaj's Omkara, Maqbool, and Haider.
With RS Prasanna's Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir is making a comeback to the big screen. On June 20, the movie will be released.
