The first academic year at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s newly established Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM) in Sonipat, Haryana, has officially begun. The center, which will be located at the government ITI in Master Atul, will begin operations in September 2025 and will be able to teach over 100 students in four vocational trades: Mechanic Motor Vehicle (MMV), Welder, Machinist, and Fitter.
As part of its larger skill development program that supports the government's 'Skill India Mission,' the firm has invested ₹10 crore in establishing the new JIM campus. Following the first institute founded in Uncha Majra, this is Maruti Suzuki's second JIM in the state.
organized training that includes industry integration
The JIM Sonipat will use a dual training model and is affiliated with the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) and approved by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI). In this model, classroom instruction is combined with practical experience on the shop floor. In addition to Japanese manufacturing techniques like kaizen (continuous improvement) and workplace discipline, the curriculum will address key topics including safety, quality control, and technical skills.
With a skillset that meets current industry standards, especially in the automotive manufacturing sector, this strategy aims to prepare pupils for employment.
strategic alliances and government assistance
The Haryana government supplied the land and building for JIM Sonipat as part of a Memorandum of Agreement, while Maruti Suzuki was responsible for infrastructure improvements, training equipment setup, and day-to-day operations. In order to give students hands-on experience in automotive production, the institution has also established a functioning real-world assembly line.
Gaurav Gautam, the Minister of State for Youth Empowerment & Entrepreneurship in Haryana, acknowledged the program as a major advancement for the state's development. He stressed that Maruti Suzuki's training would address the skills gap in the manufacturing sector and satisfy national employment goals.
A component of a broader plan to improve skills
JIM Sonipat is involved in a number of programs that support Maruti Suzuki's multifaceted approach to skill development. In addition to setting up independent JIMs, the firm supported the creation of 31 Automobile Skill Enhancement Centers (ASECs) throughout India for cutting-edge auto training and also helped 23 government ITIs.
The Company also invested in new age technology education (hybrid and electric vehicles) by introducing high-voltage technology in 130 ITIs across India. As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, Maruti Suzuki invested more than 450 crores in skill development until FY2024-25.
The Indian and Japanese governments are working together on a program called JIMs to train 30,000 Indian adolescents in manufacturing skills with the goal of finishing this by 2026. Over 2,100 students have graduated from Maruti Suzuki's-sponsored JIMs since the program's inception.
Maruti Suzuki and their future in Sonipat will help prepare India's labor force for the future as the automobile industry moves from older technologies and quality standards to newer ones and higher quality standards.
