Virat Kohli May Return to Indian Cricket If Conditions Align: ‘His Love for Test Cricket Remains’

The fact that Virat Kohli will no longer be in the dressing room wearing whites as we get closer to the Test series between India and England, which begins in 14 days, is becoming more and more evident. Nearly a month has passed since Kohli made the decision to give up the format that he loved and had a passion for like no other. Additionally, he is just 36 years old. He could have continued for a few more years, no doubt? Only Kohli knows why he made his choice. His absence will be felt in England, though, especially when someone else walks out to bat at the fall of India's second wicket in Headingley, Leeds.

When IPL president Arun Dhumal begged Virat to reconsider his decision a few days ago, Indian cricket made one last effort to convince Kohli. If his squad, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, won the IPL, he said he wanted Kohli to retract his retirement. Despite the fact that it's been over 48 hours since RCB won their first IPL title, Kohli hasn't said anything about it. But shortly after becoming an IPL champion, he did make it clear that he still has a lot of respect for Test cricket, referring to his IPL victory as "five levels below" Test cricket.

For this reason, Michael Clarke thinks that Virat Kohli may not be done wearing white clothes. If the Indian side is rogered in England, the former captain of the Australia World Cup-winning team is convinced that Kohli will retire. Since 2007, India has not won a Test series in England. They drew 2-2 in 2021/22, were humiliated 1-4 in 2018, lost 1-3 in 2014, and were defeated 0-4 in 2011. Since this is one of the least experienced Indian squads to ever travel to England, India's wait may continue, and if so, it's possible that Kohli will reconsider his choice with a little bit of encouragement.

"I think this." I believe that the supporters will want Virat Kohli to quit his retirement and resume playing Test cricket if India travels to England and is beaten, say, 5-0 in the series. In all honesty, I believe that if the captain, selectors, and fans backed him, he would agree to it if they were heavily defeated in England. He continues to like Test cricket. His words, I believe, are genuine in that you can hear his enthusiasm for Test cricket, as Clarke stated on the Beyond23 podcast.

"He sees it as the pinnacle, and he's still playing well enough cricket. Regardless of his reasons, everyone reaches the moment in their career when they decide to retire. If that's the case, so be it. However, as I said, if they are defeated, like a 5-0 defeat in England, which I don't believe will happen. Even in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, I believe they can still win in England. I believe this Indian team is a decent one.

According to Clarke, Virat will have a lot on his plate.

It's also possible to see it from the perspective that, despite what he has said, Kohli still has unfinished business with England. Four years after a forgettable tour in 2014, during which he only managed to score 134 runs in five tests, he made a remarkable comeback, which was perhaps the greatest ever seen in Test cricket, when he smashed close to 700 runs. Even though India lost that series, he brought the squad dangerously close to making history three years later. The Test matches in Lord's and The Oval were won by India, and the Trent Bridge game was in their hands until the weather turned against them on the last day. Because of Covid-19, the fifth Test was postponed to the following year, and India lost it, finishing the series at a score of 2-2.

Clarke is conscious of the reality that the present Indian team is talented and capable of achieving what no other Indian team has accomplished in the past 18 years. However, Kohli might be compelled to retract his resignation if things go haywire.

"India is a cricket-loving nation." They want their squad to be victorious. In my opinion, they may still defeat England. There you have it. In my opinion, they're a decent club. However, I believe there will be a push for Virat Kohli to come out of retirement if they do not and instead get flogged," he stated.
