Steve Smith Set to Avoid Surgery, Eyes Comeback in West Indies Series

On Day 3 of the WTC Final against South Africa at Lord's, Steve Smith sustained a terrible finger injury. The Australian vice-captain has also made significant progress in his recovery. When he dropped Temba Bavuma in the slip cordon, Smih got the injury.

The experienced Australian was donning a helmet and was nearer than the typical first slip position. He grassed the effort, and Bavuma was given a second chance on 2. Smith also injured his right hand's little finger while attempting to catch.

With his bone protruding from his skin, he fled the field in agony, followed by the team doctor and physiotherapist.

Smith's wound was stitched, raising the possibility that he may avoid surgery, but the entire degree of the injury is unknown, according to a report in The Daily Telegraph.

Australia's assistant coach, Daniel Vettori, stated, "We were not up to speed in terms of how gruesome the injury was," at the same time.

"Once he returns from the hospital, we'll simply wait to see what happens."

Prior to the West Indies trip, Smith was also anticipated to participate in a few MLC games. During his commentary, former Australian opener Matthew Hayden stated, "He will have eight weeks, at least, possibly with some rehab time."

"Definitely, there's a chance for surgery there."

After the loss, Australian captain Pat Cummins remarked, “Things can change pretty quickly but unfortunately it's a bridge too far. (where did the game change?) There're always a few things, having a pretty decent first innings lead, that's where you kind of want to bat the opposition out of the game, did not quite do that.” Perhaps the conditions would have favored us a bit more if we had batted for another session as well. That fourth inning was amazing; there wasn't much on that wicket, but they really didn't give us a chance.

"It has been a bit of both; the past two years have been fantastic, and the players have performed exceptionally well to get us here. No doubt the first two days, the bowlers were fantastic and always seemed like the ball was darting about. This game did not come together." Yes, that's correct. You always gave a round of applause after each run, but, regrettably, it didn't really happen for us this time; instead, it seemed like the wicket was beginning to flatten out. Again, it can change quickly here in England.
