Another squad is already considering Shedeur Sanders' future, even though he has hardly had time to unpack his belongings in Cleveland. According to Newsweek, the rookie quarterback was recently included to the 45-man negotiation list of the Toronto Argonauts, the current Grey Cup winners.

The Browns selected Sanders, who had just dropped to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft after being overlooked by several clubs. "It's time to seize the opportunity—gotta go in there with a different mindset; and lead the program in whatever role I gotta be in until it's my time," Sanders said after being drafted, according to ESPN.

Deion Sanders' son was widely regarded as one of the most accomplished passers in college football after a fantastic season at Colorado, where he completed 74% of his throws for over 4,100 yards and 37 touchdowns. But despite the production, his draft stock declined, in part because of worries about his pocket timing and reports of a speeding ticket that allegedly raised character concerns in certain war rooms.

The reason the CFL is paying attention to Shedeur Sanders

The Argonauts, who have exclusive rights to sign Sanders should he ever decide to go north, have included him on their list of candidates for the Canadian Football League (CFL). Although it is a common maneuver in the Canadian league, it demonstrates Sanders' potential worth even outside the NFL. Toronto has previously employed this strategy with former NFL players such Ricky Williams, Chad Kelly, and Johnny Manziel.

Shedeur has agreed to a four-year rookie contract with a $4.65 million value, which includes a $447,000 signing bonus. At about $70,000 CAD, the CFL's minimum rookie pay is not even close.

Sanders has been under constant pressure from quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt, notably in the areas of blitz identification and footwork. Sanders will compete head-to-head in training camp against other backups for the highly sought-after position of backup quarterback to Watson. The Argonauts' assertion is merely a footnote if he makes the 53-man roster. However, the CFL window would open if he were to land on the practice squad or experience roster reductions, giving Toronto a 10-day exclusive window to try to win him over.
