As the Indian paceman listened to it from the sidelines with a smile on his face, former India head coach Ravi Shastri once more praised Jasprit Bumrah throughout his commentary on Day 3 of Edgbaston. While India were in control of England, with half of their side back in the pavilion for 87, Shastri once more lauded Bumrah on-air, as he has done many times before. To lighten his workload, the best pacer was rested for the second Test, a decision that annoyed a number of cricket enthusiasts and experts, notably Shastri, who was not pleased with the team management's choice when India was behind in the series.

India increased their overall advantage to 244 runs with stumps, with KL Rahul (28*) and Karun Nair (7*) in the middle of their second innings with 64-1.
