India, July 17 – Despite the fact that the jury is still out on whether Shane Gillis's opening speech at the 2025 Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards (ESPYS) was a success or failure, the comedian and actor filled it with humor.

The Indiana Fever basketball player, Caitlin Clarke, who has been capturing attention, was the subject of one such gag.

"When Caitlin Clark retires from the WNBA, she's going to work at a Waffle House so she can continue doing what she loves most: fist-fighting black women," he joked.

Clark's game against the Connecticut Sun, in which she had a heated argument with the referee and sustained an injury in the last minute of the match, was immediately followed by Gillis' joke. Clark could be seen heading for the bench, clearly annoyed, even though her squad had won.

During the game, Clark sustained an injury to his right groin. "I think we just take it one step at a time," her coach had said at the time, adding, "We'll get some food and get on the plane and start talking about New York." She is undergoing assessment; we will see where we stand with that. And surely, we'll have another evaluation, maybe, and conversation in the morning to see where we are. However, this group has continued to play in her absence. At least we have experience in that. We are aware that New York poses a significant challenge for us. No matter what, we know it will be tough, and all we have to do is focus and prepare to compete.

Gillis' humor was not limited to Clark; he also made fun of the Jeffrey Epstein list, suggesting that it may not have ever existed, which is a reference to President Donald Trump's assertion that the documents are a Democratic conspiracy.

Social media users made several opinions regarding Gillis' humor, with some agreeing that his jokes were amusing and that the host was targeting everyone present, while others said that the host's opening remarks were "terrible" and that he was not making an impression.
