During Game 2 of the finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers on Sunday, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander broke an NBA record by joining Michael Jordan, Kevin Durant, and Kobe Bryant. To finish a 3000-point season (regular season and playoffs), the current MVP, SGA, made the 12th three-pointer in his career during the opening minutes of the game.

Wilt Chamberlain has scored 3000-point seasons five times, but Jordan has done it 10 times, which is a record. Only once have Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant accomplished it.

However, he is still searching for his first NBA Finals victory. He stated this repeatedly prior to Game 2: "I have stated this so many times, I don't play for the individual stuff. I only play to win. I've never done anything else in my entire life."

The only athletes in NBA history who have scored 3,000 points in a single season are listed below:

Wilt Chamberlain: 5 times (1960–61, 1961–62, 1962–63, 1963–64, 1965–66)

Michael Jordan: 10 times (1986-87, 1987-88, 1988-89, 1989-90, 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93, 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98)

Bob McAdoo: One occurrence (1974–75)

Elgin Baylor: once (1962–63)

James Harden: once (2018–19)

Once for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1971–72)

Kevin Durant: once (2013–14)

One time for Kobe Bryant (2005–06)

Once: Luka Donic (2023–2024)

Shaquille O'Neal: 1 occasion (1993–94)

Following a regular season record of 68-14, the Thunder entered the playoffs as the NBA's top overall seed. However, they fell to the Pacers in Game 1 by a score of 111-110 after Tyrese Haliburton made a buzzer shot to give Indiana the lead.

"The route to get here throughout the year has not been about reaching the finals," Haliburton stated prior to Game 2. "It's a day at a time, especially after the start of the year. And it's challenging since we have social media, friends, and relatives informing us of every possible outcome, including whether or not you can win the two games at home, on the road, or anywhere else.
