6 months ago | 5 Views
In the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 match between the Punjab Kings and the Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, Shreyas Iyer shattered three records. After defeating MI by five wickets, PBKS will now compete in the championship game against Virat Kohli and the Royal Challengers Bangalore on June 3.
Due to the rain delay, Iyer guided Punjab's efforts in a record-breaking run chase. PBKS successfully chased down 204 runs with an over to spare, while the skipper remained undefeated with 87 off 41 runs. Nehal Wadhera (48 off 29 balls) and Josh Inglis (38 off 21 balls) also helped the team win. Their top bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, was having an off day for MI. He didn't take any wickets and gave up forty runs.

Shreyas Iyer Sets Several Records
Iyer broke numerous records during PBKS' victory. By hitting the most sixes by a Punjab batter in a season, he defeated Chris Gayle and Glenn Maxwell. At 30, the man now has a total of 38 maximums, eight of which he has scored against Mumbai.

36 Glenn Maxwell (2014)
34 Chris Gayle (2019)
34 Liam Livingstone (2022)
32 KL Rahul (2018)
Iyer made history by becoming the first captain to guide three separate clubs to the IPL championship game. Delhi Capitals made it to the championship game in 2020 under his direction. Shreyas Iyer led the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL championship four years later.
The Mumbai Indians have, for the first time in the IPL, failed to defend a score of over 200 runs, falling short of the 204-run chase. The highest score in IPL playoffs or knockouts belongs to PBKS. Punjab has achieved 200+ runs for the eighth time, the most of any club.
For his outstanding innings on Sunday, Shreyas Iyer was selected as the player of the match. Regarding maintaining composure during batting, he said, "To be honest, I adore such big occasions. I constantly remind myself and my teammates that the more tranquil you are, the better the outcomes you get when the stakes are high. Today was a perfect illustration of where I was more concerned with my breathing than with perspiring.
Tilak Varma (44) and Suryakumar Yadav (44) were the Mumbai Indians' top scorers in the first innings.
Brief Scores: In 20 overs, MI scored 203/6 (Suryakumar Yadav 44, Tilak Varma 44; Azmatullah Omarzai 2/43, Kyle Jamieson 1/30), but PBKS defeated them by 5 wickets with a score of 207/5 in 19 overs (Shreyas Iyer 87 not out, Nehal Wadhera 48, Josh Inglis 38).
