Ravi Shastri Hails Shubman Gill: ‘Batted Like Bradman When India Needed Most’

Ravi Shastri, the former head coach of the Indian national team, claimed that during the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Shubman Gill, the captain of India, batted in the manner of Don Bradman. Despite his 147 in the opening Test at Headingley, Shubman Gill was under a lot of pressure since he was unable to guide India to a win. But in the second Test, Gill smashed several records by scoring 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second, contributing to India's historic 336-run victory, which was their greatest ever on the road.
Gill's captaincy and batting were rated highly by Shastri, who compared him to the legendary former Australian batsman Don Bradman, who still holds the record for the highest average (99.94) in the history of Test cricket.
Shastri, who was also joined by former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain as well as former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik on a Sky Sports podcast, stated that "The best by a captain. 10 out of 10," adding, "I mean, you can't ask for anything more from a captain. In the series, you are 1-0 behind. You step out there and hit like Bradman. You ultimately won the game with scores of 268 (269) and 161.
"In the first Test, your leadership was quite reactive. You kept an eye on the ball. However, in the following match, you took a very proactive approach. By choosing Akash Deep, who will give England problems as this series goes on, you may have just discovered the greatest seamer for English conditions in this Indian squad, Shastri continued.
Gill lit up the match with his first double hundred, scoring 269 runs in India's opening innings, which was the highest score ever for an Indian captain in England. It surpassed Virat Kohli's previous mark of 254*. His classy knock, which included 30 fours and 3 sixes over 387 balls, helped India reach a strong 587. He also broke several records, such as being the first Asian captain to score a double century in England.
In the second innings, Gill kept up his attack by smashing a smooth 161 runs off 162 balls, bringing his total match score to 430 runs, which is the second-highest by an away player in Tests. With India scoring 427/6, England was given a huge goal of 608. To help his four wickets in the first innings, Akash Deep, a pacer, then grabbed six wickets in the second innings, bringing England's score to 271.
Shubman Gill as seen through the eyes of Ravi Shastri for the first time
Following Gill's outstanding performance in the 2019 U19 World Cup, Shastri described how he accelerated Gill's inclusion into the Indian team. When Gill made his debut in 2019, Shastri was the head coach of the Indian team.
"I watched him in the nets. Raghu (Raghavendra, India's throwdown expert) bowls at 160 in the nets. He bounces the hitters. This man was only hitting him (Shubman Gill). Aside from Kohli, I haven't seen any Indian players do it that way. This guy next to Kohli. In the past, this man paid Kohli a lot of attention. everything else, including his training methods. I remember telling Vikram Rathour, my Punjab-born hitting instructor. "Who is that guy? Bring him in the mix immediately," I said to him when I phoned. We got him into the team by talking to the selectors. He performed admirably in the U19 division, but I exclaimed, "This is class," the first time I saw him. Sachin Tendulkar, who quickly captured people's attention, is someone I've seen. When Kohli captained and played, and then this guy, when I first saw him, was class," Shastri continued.
