Nehra’s Cool Demeanor Powers GT’s IPL 2025 Campaign

Mumbai: You can picture Ashish Nehra enjoying coconut water on a training day. After the IPL concludes, the Gujarat Titans head coach will return to his house in Goa. Nehra usually enjoys a holiday lifestyle unless he's making plans and conspiracies for GT.
Nehra's coaching style exudes the same coolness that his players and fellow support team appear to adore. He also has the facts to back him up. Titan has made it to the playoffs in three out of the four years Nehra has been in charge. They won the title in their first attempt in 2022 and lost the 2023 final by the narrowest of margins.
Like football managers, IPL coaches can be unreliable. Maintaining the position depends solely on performance. However, during his somewhat brief time, Nehra has advocated for a specific coaching style that emphasizes teamwork and simplicity.
Whether it be Vikram Solanki, the Director of Cricket, Aashish Kapoor, the assistant coach, Gary Kirsten, the former batting coach, or Parthiv Patel, the current batting coach, Nehra has worked with his support team in the past, either during his time as a player or in his prior position as the bowling coach for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
“In this format, you have to watch a team over a two-to three-year period. Nehra stated on the franchise's in-house podcast that maintaining simplicity is essential for that. "Otherwise, in this social media world, once you lose two-three matches, you are rubbished."
At GT, like at Chennai Super Kings, there is very little owner involvement. Nehra serves as the taskmaster at GT, while Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni split the duties for the guys wearing yellow.
However, Nehra's approach to coaching is quite unlike that of CSK. Nehra is always able to communicate a message during a live game, even if Fleming sometimes restricts talks during play and allows players to make their own decisions. With Gill, it would be no different than when he was at RCB close to Virat Kohli's ear.
“He likes to provide a lot of input. Furthermore, I enjoy receiving a lot of feedback on the progress of the game. Gill informed the broadcasters that "it's been working really well for us."
Do bowlers often find this football-style sideline communication disruptive? According to GT pacer Gerald Coetzee, any knowledge was beneficial as long as it was "clear and not coming from too many voices."
“Everyone has seen how observant Ashish is. You may be in the moment, but he sometimes has a slightly detached viewpoint,” Coetzee remarked to HT in a media encounter.
A senior pro like Jayant Yadav is chosen if there is a message to convey between overs. Nehra stated on the podcast, "What Jayant may be able to do, someone else may not."
Jayant Yadav was once requested to send a message to Rahul Tewatia during one of the chase heists, but he kept his head and didn't say anything because he knew his Haryana teammate was in the zone.
The notion that Nehra is anti-data and that all of his statements are based on intuition is untrue. Typically, Sandeep Raju, GT's data analyst and talent scout, sits beside Nehra during games. Nehra, though, would never use data to provide a captain with coded instructions on which bowler to bring in next.
Nehra's game sense is well-regarded by the other players. Nehra's remarks, who is a quick bowler with a fragile physique and who reached maximum speeds and experienced a late performance burst with T20 cricket, are full of meat. "Technically, there is not much time to do in these tournaments. Coetzee stated, "It's primarily tactical stuff." "We conduct some off-field things, such as how he is genuinely adept at describing various soils and how they connect to the batters during bowling."
"He has a very intimate meeting. The way he evaluates the pitch, the weather, and the batters is helpful in the game, according to Prasidh Krishna. "He understands what the bowler is trying to do."
Nehra encounters a significant obstacle for the first time in the competition this year. The Titans missed a top-two finish due to consecutive defeats at the conclusion of the league stage. Their bowlers have gone off the boil, giving up 230 or more twice. Rashid Khan, GT's trump card, has been out of sorts.
Nehra will never lose her cool. He maintains simplicity in a field where people have been guilty of overcomplicating matters.
