Jos Buttler Predicts Shubman Gill Will Become One of India’s Top 4 Most Influential Figures After the Prime Minister

According to Jos Buttler, the great England white-ball player, Shubman Gill, who is now the captain of the Indian Tests, will rank third or fourth in terms of influence in the country, following the Prime Minister. When they face England in a five-match Test series starting June 20 in Leeds, Gill, who was appointed captain of India's Test team after Rohit Sharma declared his retirement from red-ball cricket last month, will lead the Indian side in a fresh start without legends like Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin. Buttler first spoke about Gill and his leadership skills before that.
"I don't think we can fully comprehend the level of interest and fame that these people possess. In the For The Love Of Cricket podcast, Buttler told former England fast bowler Stuart Broad, "You see it around the IPL, you're aware of it, but actually living that yourself… I think they say the Indian Test captain is like the third or fourth most influential person in India, behind the Prime Minister etc. - so you really are put up on that pedestal."
Buttler played under Gill's captaincy in IPL 2025 when he joined the Gujarat Titans after the Rajasthan Royals failed to retain him before the big auction. Along with Sai Sudharsan, both Gill and Buttler had outstanding batting seasons, contributing to a potent top order that aided GT in making the playoffs this year.
Shubman Gill's captaincy blends elements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
The former England captain described Shubman Gill as a leader using terms like "calm," "measured," and "interesting" when Broad requested Buttler to do so. In order to provide some context, Butter described Gill as a blend of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma when it comes to leading the squad. Both Kohli and Rohit had a high degree of intensity on the field, but Kohli was an in-your-face leader while Rohit was more laid-back and relaxed.
Buttler stated, "He's a really impressive player and an impressive young man." "He's pretty calm and measured when he speaks, but [it]'s interesting, I feel like on the field he's got a bit of fight about him; a bit of intensity, quite passionate." I believe he'll be a combination of Rohit and Kohli.
"Kohli [was] that sort of real aggressive [character], in your face, up for the contest, and he really transformed the Indian team." Rohit had that kind of fight, but he was a little more laid back, cool, calm, and collected—on the other hand. Based on my experience with Shubman thus far, I believe he will be somewhat intermediate. He's clearly taken lessons from those two men, but he'll still be his own person.
One of Gill's greatest obstacles, according to Buttler, will be to make sure that the captaincy doesn't influence his batting, as it did with Buttler near the conclusion of his tenure as England's white-ball captain.
"Butler stated, "He talked about compartmentalising batting and captaining; so when he's batting, he just wants to be a batter, and then he will try and work on his captaincy and try and separate the two roles." "When you're doing such a big job as being captain of the Indian cricket team, he’ll have to try and do that well and have some good people supporting him."
