Vaibhav Suryavanshi is being touted as the next major wunderkind in Indian cricket. Comparisons to Sachin Tendulkar have already been made as a result of his displays for India U-19 and the Rajasthan Royals. In the big auction prior to IPL 2025, RR spent ₹1.1 crore on Suryavanshi, breaking the bank for him.

The 14-year-old sat on the bench for the first few games of RR, but after Sanju Samson was injured, he was brought in to open the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal, an Indian player. At the young age of 14 years and 23 days, he played against Lucknow Super Giants on April 19, 2025, marking his IPL debut. In addition, it established him as the youngest player to make his debut in IPL history. He scored 34 runs off 20 balls in his IPL debut, which included a six on the first ball. It didn't stop there; on April 28, he faced off against Shubman Gill's Gujarat Titans and went one step further, becoming the youngest player in IPL history to score a century at the age of 14 years and 32 days. The youngster reached his century in just 35 balls and battered Mohammed Siraj and Rashid Khan, scoring 101 runs off 38 balls.

Jos Buttler makes a huge prediction about 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi: 'His bat swing is like Yuvraj Singh and Brian Lara' | Cricket News - Times of India

"It's both uplifting and disappointing"

Jos Buttler, who was there for that game and kept wickets for GT, was interviewed by Stuart Broad on a YouTube podcast about his initial thoughts on Suryavanshi. The T20 World Cup-winning captain's reaction revealed that he was captivated by both Suryavanshi's century and his first season.

"It's both uplifting and depressing." This dude is 20 years younger than me, and he's just beating us all around the field. "Yes, it was like shockwaves throughout the cricket world, but the story was that a 14-year-old boy was chosen out. He was the youngest in the auction, and Jimmy (Anderson) was the oldest, which was the age difference," he stated.

"But yes, he really did score six runs with his first ball in the IPL. I believe he played two or three matches before facing us. He gave himself a little space on the first ball he faced in the IPL and hit it over wide long off for a six. I think I love these guys out there now, and that fearlessness. The shot was premeditated; it wasn't just there; he looked for it, and then he was somewhat born. There are so many wonderful players that they seem to want to make a statement, as in, "Look at me." I'm not sure how long before that he thought, "I'm going to try and hit my first ball for six," but we have to try to get him on the pod and ask him.

“Our bowling attack against us includes Mohammed Siraj, a fantastic international bowler; Prasidh Krishna, an international bowler; and Rashid Khan, the top T20 bowler. Moreover, the magnitude of the sixes—since they weren't simply clearing the limits—was significant.

"35 balls 100 was ridiculous. In fact, he played an innings a few games later against Chennai. I was watching on TV, and R. Ashwin and Jadeja, who are experienced pros for the season in Chennai, would knock them out into the stands and then sort of knock one out to cover, as if they were saying, "I'm so in control, I'll just take one now, drop down the other end." And right then and there, I think to myself, "This guy is the best player I've ever seen." For example, it astounds me. The 100 was fantastic, wasn't it? He did it exactly like that, but he went for it with every ball. He went on to say, "There was no fear."

Buttler disclosed that he believed Suryavanshi's bat swing resembled that of two cricket greats after viewing a few films when questioned about his team's strategy for Suryavanshi.

"He played a few games." I believe he played first-class cricket at the age of 12 or so, which is impressive even by today's standards. He comes from a tiny state in somewhat northeastern India. I believe it's known as Bihar. Although not many cricketers have emerged from there, he is already playing first-class cricket at such a young age. I believe he scored one of the quickest hundreds for India U-19s against Australia U-19s, which was likely just before the auction, around that period. Thus, a video has surfaced. He has been seen by others with this fantastic bat swing. "It's a huge statement, Yuvraj (Singh)/Lara (Brian)," he remarked.

"But at the same time you're a bit like, 'Why am I getting so scared of a 14-year-old?'"

He is now in England with the India U-19 team, where he will attempt to leave his impression during the tour.
