England would have plenty of reasons to exhale even without the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma; Ben Stokes and his squad would be well rested, knowing that Jasprit Bumrah, India's top fast bowler, would also have a restricted role in the five-match Test series that begins on Friday. Bumrah's workload management has been a topic of discussion for some time, but it became a major issue when he missed almost a year of play because of a stress fracture in his back. This concern was exacerbated just a few months ago, in January of this year, when his back flared up again. Bumrah broke down during the Sydney Test against Australia and was forced to take three months off, missing India's successful Champions Trophy run.

If India is to achieve their first Test series victory on English soil since 2007, as usual, a lot of expectations are placed on Bumrah's shoulder... and body, now that another big series is imminent. Before the squad left for the UK, Gautam Gambhir, India's head coach, reiterated that Bumrah would not be participating in all five Tests—Leeds, Birmingham, London (twice), and Manchester. However, it is still up in the air which ones he will or will not play.

According to Bharat Arun, former India bowling coach, the coaching staff won't have to closely monitor Bumrah's workload and should actually have him participate in all five Tests—unless the other bowlers assist him. Bumrah was the lone warrior with the ball in Australia, taking 32 wickets, while his other fast bowlers battled throughout. That cannot occur in England; if it does, Bumrah will need to reevaluate his strategy and choose his fights.

"Both excessive and insufficient bowling can lead to injuries." They make for the ideal situation for a bowler to get hurt. Jasprit Bumrah's over count in a game is therefore clearly beyond our control. However, based on the number of overs bowled, the practice sessions might be shortened for him when he needs to focus on his rehabilitation. It might involve some recovery work with physiotherapists or a strengthening workout at the gym. Dealing with him will be important," Arun told RevSportz.

"Bumrah's presence in the squad greatly increases its worth." He not only performs well, but he also encourages others. Having Bumrah in the lineup would surely boost their confidence as they ride in. Jasprit Bumrah can only be saved and used in all five Tests if there is exceptional support from the other bowlers; thus, I ideally expect him to participate in every Test match. I'm worried that if he is shouldering the majority of the work, he won't be prepared for every game. For Bumrah to play in all Test matches, it is crucial how the other bowlers support him. We must accept it as it comes rather than declaring that he is suited for the first three Test matches and then giving him a rest. Rather, if the other bowlers can assist Bumrah in playing all of the Test matches, India can perform very well.

Who should join Bumrah in Leeds?

Except for Arshdeep Singh, who earned his first Test cap, and Shardul Thakur, who is returning to the Test squad, Bumrah will have almost the same bowling lineup to support him as he did in Australia. Arun is quite certain of his selections for who will start with Bumrah at Headingley Stadium.

"Siraj and Bumrah are obvious choices. I'll definitely choose Arshdeep since he's a left-armer, and not many players even get to practice against left-armers in the nets. For the other two bowlers, it's a toss-up. He becomes even more powerful if he is a skilled left-armer. The team management will have to decide between Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur. They're really useful and pretty excellent. Both are capable of bowling over 130. Shardul is also capable of batting. "Who is bowling and batting well at that time becomes important," Arun continued.
