On the second day of the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea, Tejaswin Shankar, the silver medalist in the Asian Games, narrowly missed winning the decathlon gold, while India's mixed 4x400m relay team delivered a commanding performance to retain the championship.

Fei Xiang of China won by 16 points with 7,634 points, while Tejaswin came in second with 7,618 points. Tuesday's 1500m race marked the conclusion of the competition after two arduous days. With a time of 4:37.99, Tejaswin was unable to catch Fei. Keisuke Okuda of Japan came in third with 7602 points.

"The difference between gold and silver was 16 points. Silver and bronze differ by 16 points. That's how near it was. In these championship races, all you want to do is give it your all to win a medal for the nation, and I'm glad I could do that," Tejaswin stated.

India had a successful day, with its athletes earning six medals. The fireworks were provided by the 4x400m mixed relay quartet of Rupal Chaudhary, Santhosh Kumar, Vishal TK, and Subha Venkatesan, who won the race. The Indian squad took the lead from beginning to end and finished the race in 3 minutes and 18.12 seconds. Sri Lanka came in third (3:21.95s), while China came in a far second (3:20.52s).

At the continental competition, Tejaswin earned consecutive medals in the decathlon. The 2023 edition gave him a bronze. He established a national record at the Hangzhou Asian Games that year with 7666 points. Tejaswin was in the lead in Sumi after the five events on the first day (100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400m), but he lost ground on Wednesday. He has had difficulties with the javelin throw and pole vault.

"I set my personal best in shot put (13.79m) on the first day. I had a lot of trouble with the first two throws, but I was able to muster all my courage for the third. The momentum shifted as a result. I continued the excellent effort this morning with another PB in the 110m hurdles (14.58 seconds).

“I get the lead by excelling in my strong events on the first day. However, I'm never carried away since I know I have the javelin and pole vault left the following day. I'll get better with practice.

Vishal TK had to settle for fourth place in the men's 400-meter race, despite setting a personal record of 45.57 seconds.

Shaili Singh (6.17m) and Ancy Sojan (6.14m), two female long jumpers, advanced to the championship.

Jyothi Yarraji advanced to the 100-meter hurdles final after placing third in her heat with a time of 13.18 seconds.
