Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans were knocked out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season after losing the Eliminator against Hardik Pandya's Mumbai Indians by 20 runs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. After the defeat in the crucial encounter, emotions got the better of the families of Gujarat Titans' players and several of them were seen crying.
Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra's son was seen crying inconsolably in the stands after the last ball was bowled, and the Mumbai Indians sealed a 20-run win.
Several others in the stands were trying to console Ashish Nehra's son who was unable to control his tears. The families of the other players were also left distraught after the loss in the Eliminator in Mullanpur.
Even Shubman Gill's sister Shahneel was seen in tears and she had to be consoled by the other members seated in the stands for the contest between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians.
For the majority of the IPL 2025 league stage, the Gujarat Titans were in the lead, but a defeat in their final two group-stage games against the Lucknow Super Giants and the Chennai Super Kings led to the 2022 winners playing the Eliminator against the Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai Indians maintained their composure in the Eliminator to secure a spot in Qualifier 2, giving Shubman Gill and his teammates their third loss in a row. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will now host the five-time winners as they face the Punjab Kings.
Gujarat Titans suffer defeat at the hands of Jonny Bairstow and Rohit Sharma.
In the Eliminator against Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to bat first. By dropping critical catches, Shubman Gill and company only made things worse for themselves. Gerald Coetzee and Kusal Mendis dropped simple catches, giving Rohit Sharma two reprieves.
Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow, who was chosen to replace Ryan Rickelton, put together an opening stand of 84 runs. Sai Kishore ultimately ended Bairstow's innings at 47 runs.
With the help of 9 fours and 4 sixes, Rohit Sharma scored 81 runs off 50 balls, making the most of his opportunities. In the end, the Mumbai Indians scored a total of 228/5 in 20 overs.
In the first over of the chase, the Gujarat Titans lost their captain, Shubman Gill. In an attempt to keep Gujarat in the game, Sai Sudharsan (80) and Washington Sundar (48) gave it their all, but in the end, Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult stood firm in the closing few overs, proving the job to be too much.
At the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the Mumbai Indians will next play the Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 on Sunday, June 1.
