To remain in the competition, the Mumbai Indians defeated the Gujarat Titans by 20 runs in the IPL 2025 Eliminator on Friday. MI will play Punjab Kings in Sunday's Qualifier 2, where both teams will compete for a spot in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, now that Titans are out of the running. Jasprit Bumrah's excellence with the ball and Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow's outstanding performances with the bat were the standout moments of the game, but another highlight for spectators was the one between Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill.

As the teams faced each other on the field, the tensions remained high during the toss when both shared an uncomfortable moment as neither began the usual handshake. Hardik rejoiced wildly as he approached Gill after Shubman Gill was deemed LBW out early in the side's run chase against MI. Hardik's action immediately gained popularity among fans on social media platforms.

After only one off two pitches, Gill was fired, and the side also lost Kusal Mendis (20) soon after the Powerplay. But Washington Sundar (48) and Sai Sudharsan (80) established a fantastic connection that brought the Titans back into the match. Jasprit Bumrah's outstanding yorker was what ultimately turned the match around, as he denied Sundar a half-century and broke the partnership.

The dismissal caused GT to lose the game by 20 runs.

Earlier in the day, the pair put together an 84-run stand in just 7.2 overs, with Rohit Sharma hitting a beautiful 81 from the past and Bairstow smashing a blistering 47 off just 22 deliveries. In the Eliminator, Hardik Pandya's outstanding finish (22* off 9 balls) helped MI reach a massive total, and Rohit, who had been under pressure for his performance, came through when it counted.

For his outstanding performance, which included his fourth half-century of the game, Rohit was ultimately awarded the title of player of the match. In addition to finishing 7000 runs in the competition, the MI opener was the first Indian to ever record 300 sixes in IPL.
