The outcome delivered bad news for Novak Djokovic ahead of Wimbledon, even if American put on a superb display on serve in the rain-interrupted final to preserve his excellent recent record against the German.

The simple explanation comes down to rankings. Jack Draper dropped to sixth in the live rankings after suffering an opening-round defeat in Stuttgart, where he was unable to defend his title. He had been ranked fourth previously. Fritz's surprising win pushed the American into the top four, while Djokovic was able to take the fourth spot.

Although a possible position in Alcaraz or Sinner's quarter could put the former champion at risk of an early exit, Djokovic still has the advantage over the German, whom he easily defeated in the Roland Garros quarterfinals earlier this month, and against Fritz, and whom he has never lost to.

Djokovic has won Wimbledon eight times and has advanced to the finals of all seven of his matches in London since 2018, including two straight losses to Alcaraz, four titles in a row, and two straight losses to Alcaraz.

Following his semifinal defeat to Sinner at Roland Garros earlier this month, Djokovic is heading to London. He was forced to retire during the semifinal match against Zverev at the Australian Open due to an injury in Melbourne.
