Cameron Norrie Vows to Amp Up Energy Against Carlos Alcaraz After Wimbledon Rival’s ‘Annoying’ Remark
4 months ago | 5 Views
Despite receiving flak for his on-court demeanor in earlier rounds, Cameron Norrie is looking forward to playing defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Tuesday and has vowed to maintain the same intensity throughout their match.
"I'm thrilled to face him, and I'm going to have to perform at my highest level, and even better, to have a chance because his game is so varied," Norrie said.
“I’m going to have to be strong and put in more effort if I want a chance.”
Norrie's lively demeanor on the court has drawn criticism from past opponents, including Frances Tiafoe and Nicolas Jarry, on his way to the last eight.
Following Norrie's second-round victory over him by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, and 7-5, Tiafoe remarked, "He was super-amped." "From the first game, he was saying 'c'mon,' which is undoubtedly irritating, but I was more bothered by that aspect than by the audience."
During their fourth-round match, Jarry also expressed his annoyance by calling out Norrie's boisterous celebrations and the time he spent between second serves.
Norrie has maintained his position, despite the scrutiny, that he is not altering his competitive strategy in any way.
“We’re out there playing and competing for a living,” he stated. "As such, I want to compete as hard as I can, and I won't let anyone else defeat me or let me roll over matches." I'm doing it for myself; I'm not trying to make anyone else feel bad.
"That's not why I'm doing it. That's my vibe, I believe. It's not my fault if they take it personally. To stand a chance with Charly, I'll need to be strong and upbeat.
Norrie discusses his victory over Jarry
"He said I was a little bit vocal and I think: 'That's my energy,'" Norrie remarked as he pondered his five-set victory against Jarry; 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (5-7), 6-3. In my opinion, it's been in a significant match, and a few folks have expressed dissatisfaction with it.
"It makes sense that they might take it personally because I believe they also want to win the game. However, I'm only directing it at my team, at a few individuals, and at a few pals in the audience.
"I believe there were times during the game when not much was happening. Some of the points, in my opinion, may not be worth shouting "vamos" or "c'mon," but I really had to do that in this game since those little details may break you if you lose them, and the game can quickly slip out of your grasp.
Although Alcaraz holds a 4-2 advantage in their head-to-head record, Norrie defeated him in their most recent matchup.
Alcaraz said, "It's always quite, quite hard to face Cam. We already have very hard battles." I have to admit that confronting him is like a nightmare for me. From the baseline, he is quite formidable.
