Chris Paul Signals Possible Retirement from NBA This Year: What We Know

4 months ago | 5 Views

Chris Paul, a former NBA player who formerly held the record for the second-most assists, recently told the world that he might be quitting the league soon. The point guard for the San Antonio Spurs has already hinted at what he plans to do after the game's conclusion and explained why he chose to leave the court.

'At the most, a year' is what Paul gives it

Paul told the audience at the American Black Film Festival that he only gives his NBA career "at the most, a year" and that he intends to announce his retirement soon after. "It's a blessing in and of itself that I just completed my 20th season. It's fortunate that I've spent over half of my existence in the NBA. However, you don't reconnect with your children or your family during these years, he said. In other words, Paul may very well be playing his final season in 2025.

Despite being 40 years old and no longer at his best, the player started every game for the Spurs last season, scoring 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. Prior to joining the Spurs, he has played for the New Orleans Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns, and Golden State Warriors, among other teams. He has also been selected to nine All-Defensive Teams and eleven All-NBA Teams. In 2021, his Suns reached the NBA Finals but were defeated by the Milwaukee Bucks in six games.

The retirement strategy

As his current free agent status indicates that he is seeking to finish his career with a different team, the 12-time All-Star may need to make a change. According to the Dallas Hoops Journal, the player has been associated with the Charlotte Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, and Los Angeles Clippers during this offseason. In a recent statement, NBA insider Marc Stein disclosed that the player declined interest from the Dallas Mavericks and Hornets.

Even if Paul hasn't made his expectations from a new squad public, an interview on The Pat McAfee Show last month offered some insight into his thoughts. “My son just turned 16,” he said.

"I've lived without my daughter, who is 12 years old, for the last six seasons. I've been with a few clubs, but I've been apart from them for the last six years. I've visited Oklahoma City, Phoenix, San Antonio, and Golden State—they were with me in Houston. It's a bit different. That's the conversation.

Paul would have a better chance of negotiating a deal that would let him remain close to his family if this were the situation.
