BCCI Signals Future Captaincy for Iyer After Inspiring PBKS IPL 2025 Run

6 months ago | 5 Views

In the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Shreyas Iyer, the captain of the Punjab Kings, is the first captain to guide three separate teams to the championship game of the premier T20 league. In Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians, the right-handed batter was at his finest, blasting an undefeated 87-run innings off of 41 balls to lead PBKS to the competition final, where they will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa immediately went to Twitter (previously X) to forecast that the 30-year-old will lead India in several formats in the future, right after Shreyas' bat produced the game-winning runs.

It should be noted that Shreyas Iyer is now not a member of India's Test or T20I team. The batter was not chosen for the next series against England, and he also did not play for the team in India's most recent T20I series.

In the Champions Trophy, where Rohit Sharma and his teammates captured the title without dropping a game, Shreyas Iyer was India's MVP.

One of the main factors contributing to PBKS's first trip to the playoffs since 2014 has been Shreyas Iyer's excellent leadership in the current IPL 2025 and his astute understanding of the game.

PBKS purchased Shreyas for INR 26.75 crore, and he returned the favor by playing well in the IPL 2025 season, both as a captain and as a batter. Uthappa, who saw great potential in the Punjab Kings captain, has now taken notice of his performance.

"I've said this time and time again and I'll repeat it AGAIN! Iyer will lead India in several forms! He has to! He's that great," Uthappa posted on X.

More than 600 runs for Shreyas Iyer in IPL 2025

Shreyas Iyer has let his bat do all the talking in the IPL 2025 season as he has amassed 603 runs in 16 matches for PBKS at an average of 54.82 and a strike rate of 175.80.

His partnership with head coach Ricky Ponting has paid off well, as the duo has transformed PBKS into a world-beating side. It must be mentioned that Ponting and Shreyas worked together at Delhi Capitals, and the duo were the men behind DC's reaching the final in IPL 2020.

Shreyas Iyer is the first captain in IPL history to lead three different teams to finals. He first made the final with Delhi Capitals in 2020 and he then led KKR to their third title in 2024.

However, Shreyas was not retained by KKR, and the batter has spoken enough about not getting enough credit for the IPL win last season. Many believe that the then-mentor Gautam Gambhir walked away with all the applause.

Shreyas has now led Punjab Kings to their second IPL win, and the franchise has a shot at winning their maiden title when they take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the summit clash on Tuesday.
