Ashwin Calls Bumrah a 'Cheat Code', Compares Him to Road Rash Hero

Jasprit Bumrah was referred to as the "cheat code" by former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin after the bowler guided Mumbai Indians to a victory against Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Eliminator. After winning by 20 runs in Mullanpur, the five-time champion Mumbai Indians advanced to Qualifier 2. The Jasprit Bumrah-led team bowled an outstanding four-over spell, allowing only 27 runs at a sub-seven run per over economy, as the Shubman Gill-led side appeared to be on course to chase 229 for the majority of the match.

Washington Sundar and Sai Sudharsan scored 84 runs for the third wicket. In the 14th over, Bumrah broke the vital partnership by smashing Sundar's stumps, getting him out for 48. The left-handed hitter was sent back to the pavilion because he was unable to respond to a toe-crushing yorker.

Ashwin praised Bumrah, saying that the pacer occasionally makes the skipper seem better than he is. Additionally, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya acknowledged at the post-match presentation that he was fortunate to have a player like Bumrah on his squad.

"If Jasprit Bumrah's over hadn't occurred, this game may have been even closer. The asking rate was about 12, 13, 14, but in his previous two overs, he scored around seven or eight runs. Bumrah is defined by the manner in which he responded to being struck for a six by Rahul Tewatia by scoring one run in the following two deliveries. During the T20 World Cup, I tweeted that Bumrah is a cheat code in modern T20 cricket. On his YouTube channel "Ash Ki Baat," Ashwin inquired, "Have you ever played this road rash, NFS game? It's a cheat code."

"You can input a code and run quicker if you play these games. You may defeat everyone else. It's a hack. At times, I feel that Jasprit Bumrah improves a captain's reputation in the modern world. I believe that Mumbai also went to yorkers very early on, considering how well he hits them and how well he varies his slower balls, all things being said and done.

'Avoid comparing Bumrah to Wasim Akram'

With 18 wickets captured, Bumrah has been the best player for the Mumbai Indians during the IPL 2025 season. When the team has been in a tough situation, he has repeatedly defended the franchise.

Ashwin, though, pleaded with supporters not to compare him to Wasim Akram and Malcolm Marshall since he doesn't like comparing cricketers from various eras.

"I have never seen Malcolm Marshall bowl. However, I have heard a lot about him. I've seen Wasim Akram bowl. The Indian team has been terrorized by him. However, comparing across generations is not a good idea. I am so, so happy in the environment in which we regard batsmen as great people, in Indian cricket, and in the world of today," Ashwin said.

Everyone can see that I'm using my own language. If not, I would have been less free-flowing. Jasprit Bumrah has unquestionably given Phillip for Indian fast bowlers to run in a long way and bowl with intelligence and excellent execution, and I am so, so, so delighted for him. The winner is the bowler, Jasprit Bumrah. However, the impact he has made on the Indian bowling community, particularly in the area of quick bowling, is a different subject altogether, he said.

Now, on Sunday, June 1, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the Qualifier 2 match between the Mumbai Indians and the Punjab Kings.
