Ashutosh Sharma Arrives in England at Dawn, Scores Blazing 70-Ball Century on Club Debut After Early Collapse
6 months ago | 5 Views
India's up-and-coming T20 star Ashutosh Sharma gave Wigan Cricket Club an unforgettable welcome gift just hours after arriving in the UK: a debut century that helped the team recover from a top-order collapse in the Liverpool and District Cricket Competition, which is a part of the ECB Premier League structure.
Ashutosh, who recently signed for Wigan for the 2025 season, immediately made an impression when he walked out to bat at No. 5 in his first game against Formby CC, with his side struggling at 17-3 in 9.5 overs. From there, he launched a remarkable counteroffensive. In a match-defining 153-run stand that saved Wigan from an early catastrophe, Ashutosh joined forces with opener Aveen Dalugod.
Throughout his innings, he demonstrated remarkable poise and restraint in the face of adversity. Ashutosh hit six sixes and eight boundaries, ending up with a strike rate of 136.99. In only 70 balls, he reached his century.
Nevertheless, his dismissal in the 34th over sparked another collapse. Ashutosh's departure signaled another turning point for the worse as Wigan fell from 170-3 to 195-7 in the course of seven overs.
It's noteworthy that Ashutosh's performance occurred on the very day he arrived in the UK. He arrived at 7:30 AM and participated in the game hours later.

After scoring 204 runs at an average of 29.14 and a strike rate of 160.62 during his IPL 2025 campaign with Delhi Capitals, the 25-year-old had just finished his season. Ashutosh immediately seized the chance to play for this team in England after Delhi's defeat in the playoffs.
Previously, he had impressed in the 2024 IPL season with Punjab Kings, smashing 189 runs at a strike rate of 167.25. In the 2025 auction, Delhi bought him, and his powerful hitting continued to be a bright spot in what was otherwise a disappointing season for the team.
Despite having played 14 List games in professional white-ball cricket, he has yet to score a century. Although Ashutosh has just played in a few games and 44 T20s, he has a first-class century in eight games, averaging 28.46 with a high of 123.
This summer, he's not the only one waving the Indian flag in English club cricket. After going unsold in the 2025 IPL auction, KS Bharat joined Dulwich CC and, in his first match, this month, he smashed 134 runs off 108 balls against Esher CC.
India A team is also in England, where they faced the England Lions in the first unofficial Test before the five-match Test series. In the game, Karun Nair, who is also a member of Delhi Capitals with Ashutosh, scored a double century for India A.
