June 14 India, India defeated China in the gold medal match of the 10m air rifle mixed team event on the last day of the Munich shooting World Cup, thanks to an extraordinarily unflappable display by Arya Borse and Arjun Babuta.
After Sheng Lihao and Wang Zifei of China won the qualification round in a 58-team field, Borse-Babuta defeated them 17-7. Wang, an 18-year-old 2024 world champion, scored 318.2, the highest individual score in the final, while Sheng, the current world No. 1 and double gold medalist at last year's Paris Olympics, scored 317.7.
Borse, who had just won two mixed team silver medals in Buenos Aires and Lima with Rudrankksh Patil, scored 317.5, while Babuta, who heartbreakingly placed fourth in Paris, scored 317.7. With a combined score of 635.2, the Indians fell short of the Chinese total by 0.7 points, which set a qualification world record.
Borse started the final with a 9.8, giving the Chinese duo an early advantage, but the Indians quickly discovered their rhythm. They moved to a commanding 13-3 lead with just one shot under 10.5 in the next seven sets of single shots (a commendable 10.2).

The Chinese duo won the following two sets in the race to 16, but Borse and Babuta answered with high 10s to reach match point.
In the last and twelfth series, Borse outshot Wang, giving India a great victory, while Babuta cancelled out Sheng with an identical 10.1. Norwegians Jeanette Hegg Duestad and Jon-Hermann Hegg took the bronze medal by defeating America's Sagen Maddalena and Peter Matthew Fiori 16-14.
Elavenil Valarivan and Kiran Ankush Jadhav, the tournament's second Indian duo, scored 631.8 to place sixth overall.
Manu Bhaker and Aditya Malra of India finished sixth in the 10m air pistol mixed team event qualifiers with a score of 577, preventing them from moving on to the medal matches later. Varun Tomar and Suruchi Singh (576) finished in tenth place.
Suruchi Phogat's golden hat-trick in World Cups, which took place in the 10m air pistol event, came a day before Saturday's gold, which was India's second in the tournament.
India secured an overall third place with four medals, trailing China (six medals) and Norway (four medals). Sift Kaur Samra and Elavenil Valarivan each won bronze in the 10m air rifle and 50m three positions, respectively.
