Why Is Vijay Raaz’s Udaipur Files On Hold? Key Updates
4 months ago | 5 Views
The Udaipur Files is one example of a movie that has been subject to a stay of release just before its theatrical debut. After numerous petitions were filed to halt its release, the movie, which was originally scheduled to be released on July 11, has been the subject of legal action. The 2022 murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal served as the basis for the movie.
Regarding the hype surrounding Udaipur Files
Due to a plea claiming that the release of the Vijay Raaz-starrer film Udaipur Files may have an impact on the continuing trial in the Udaipur murder case, the movie's release has been subject to a stay order. Specifically, the petition contends that a movie that portrays the defendant as guilty prior to the conclusion of the trial may unfairly sway public opinion and jeopardize the trial's fairness.
What is the current state of the Udaipur Files?
The film's producers were instructed by the Delhi High Court on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, to organize an emergency screening for all attorneys involved in the case.
The attorneys representing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the petitioners were ordered by a division bench consisting of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Anish Dayal to view the film and return to court on Thursday to share their viewpoints.
The film Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani has requested that it be prohibited in a petition that claims it insults Muslims and disrespects the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
In the interim, additional solicitor general (ASG) Chetan Sharma, who represented the CBFC, informed a bench of chief justice DK Upadhyay and justice Anish Dayal that the board had suggested certain reductions before approving the movie, which was set to debut on Friday but has been impacted.
"We've resolved every problem mentioned in the petition. “All of the offending references and dialogues have been removed by the central board. Anything that might have been objectionable has been removed,” Sharma stated.
The film's producer, however, asserts that the edits were also made in accordance with the CBFC's recommendations.
"Prior to making a choice on whether to undergo screening, we ask that you review those cuts and return to see us tomorrow. Madani's attorney Kapil Sibal was informed by the court that you must see the movie.

The Supreme Court was also petitioned by one of the defendants in the Kanhaiya Lal murder trial, requesting that the movie be banned from being shown. The case's release would prejudice the trial, according to Mohammad Jawed, who called for an immediate hearing of the matter.
The cast of The Udaipur Files includes Vijay Raaz, Rajneesh Duggal, Preeti Jhangiani, Kamlesh Sawant, Kanchi Singh, and Mushtaq Khan.
In the meantime, the theatrical debut of Udaipur Files, which was originally planned for July 11, 2025, has been postponed.
